The Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit working to solve some of our planets most pressing environmental and safety problems. Our scientists and engineers develop and implement innovative, practical solutions to serious challengesfrom combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

For decades, the Global Security Program at UCS has brought a powerful combination of technical, political, communications, and organizing expertise to the existential threat to humanity posed by nuclear weapons. To help further this important work, we are seeking an experienced political organizer/campaigner and digital strategist skilled at developing and executing campaigns at the federal policy level that will inspire, motivate, educate, and engage UCS supporters, the public, and new partners/constituencies. The ideal candidate will have an in-depth knowledge of Congress and working with the executive branch, as well as experience developing and executing successful, impactful digital strategies focused on policymakers and decision makers.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conceive, coordinate, and implement the programs campaigns for sensible policies on nuclear weapons through supporter and grasstops engagement, coalition activities, and digital and media activities in target states
  • Work with UCS communications staff and Global Security Program staff to develop and coordinate national and local/state digital outreach strategies and activities in support of overall campaigns, including web, social media, and email engagement
  • Contribute to overall effective functioning of Global Security Program and UCS
  • Plan, manage, and assess campaign activities for nuclear weapons policy and 2020 presidential campaign advocacy and outreach in New England;
  • Lead and manage online and offline engagement of UCS supporters and members in New England;
  • Identify, cultivate, and engage grasstops and other influencers, including local and state elected officials in target states and districts;
  • Initiate, manage, and/or coordinate meetings, events, and expert convenings;
  • Represent UCS in local, state, and regional coalitions and at partner/coalition events and public and campus-based forums;
  • Identify emerging campaign opportunities, including rapid response opportunities, and facilitate UCSs strategic and timely response, including involvement of supporters and experts;
  • Work with communications and media staff to develop and implement state and regional media strategies that bolster the programs outreach efforts, including working with constituents to place letters-to-the-editor and op-eds in target media outlets;
  • Help ensure Global Security Program campaign visibility on targeted listservs and social media platform
  • Take lead responsibility for working with the campaign team and communications staff to develop and coordinate an integrated, comprehensive digital outreach and social media campaign plan to significantly increase the reach, impact, and visibility of program analysis and public education content;
  • Schedule and facilitate project-specific joint Global Security Program and communications planning meetings;
  • Help conceive and coordinate the development of public education/outreach materials and web-based/digital content for multiple web platforms and print;
  • Work with communications and Global Security Program staff to coordinate blogging efforts and strategy;
  • Oversee the scheduling and loading of campaign email alerts, invitations, etc.
  • Participate in program, campaign, and project meetings, cross-organizational meetings, and special organizational efforts;
  • Represent the program in UCS cross-programmatic initiatives;
  • Contribute to foundation proposals and reports;
  • Track effectiveness of outreach activities/projects.


Qualifications and Experience

This position requires a minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience in organizing political or issue campaigns, ideally at the federal policy level, with demonstrated knowledge and expertise in digital organizing/campaigning. Bachelor's degree preferred.

May spend extended periods at computer terminal and regular overnight travel (e.g. an average of 3-5 days/month) is expected.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position based in UCSs Cambridge office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $58,500.
