The Role:

Our site in Aurora is seeking a Sr Operations Manager to join our team. This role resides in Aurora with direct operations ownership of our low volume manufacturing substrates slurries plant in Fremont, CA including 4-6 direct reports requiring typical travel up to 25%. The role also provides leadership guidance to integrate high volume substrates slurries manufacturing into the existing Aurora plant and supports global substrates slurries business activities as required.

This role directs the development and implementation of activities in production area(s) to meet production goals, quality, and cost objectives. Prioritizes production schedules based on product introduction, equipment efficiency, and materials supply. Plans and administers procedures and budgets. Makes budgetary recommendations and, at higher levels, controls capital expenditures and direct/indirect labor. Develops schedules and manpower requirements for assigned areas. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

What You'll Do:

  • The Sr Operations Manager will provide leadership across all operations activities in Fremont, CA (Production, Planning, Shipping/ Receiving, Warehousing, Maintenance, Engineering, and other support groups). The Sr Operations Manager role will have approximately an equal split of Operations Management, and Technical/Business responsibilities. The person will develop and achieve aggressive operational goals and objectives consistent with the business strategy with focus on EHS, productivity, quality, and supporting integration of new products/processes. The role will assist the Site Production Director in general oversight of all plant business activities and lead key technical projects and initiatives.

Key Results/Responsibilities:

  • Operations Management
  • Provide performance-based management for direct reports, including goal setting, coaching, training, developing and providing feedback to improve individual and shift performance. Communicate and enforce policies and procedures regarding work instructions, EHS and quality requirements, paid time off, and corrective action in a fair and consistent manner. Prioritize production schedules based on Customer needs, equipment efficiency, manpower availability and materials supply. Monitor and drive continuous improvement for the shift's and site's key performance metrics (EH&S, productivity, quality, plant efficiency). Ensure that the accuracy of inventory records is maintained at high levels. Manage quality and quantity of direct report productivity and foster a "Coaching" and "Boundaryless" environment.
  • Technical
  • Lead root-cause investigations of manufacturing out-of-control conditions using statistical analysis and engineering expertise and drive effective corrective/preventative actions. Reduce variation in product and process parameters by identifying key contributors to variation and implementing effective control systems and enhanced manufacturing processes. Support local NPI processes and commercialization of new products. Drive productivity in manufacturing processes by identifying opportunities to improve EHS, quality, yield, efficiency, and/or cost and successfully implement the improvements. The improvements may require changes in operating procedures, manufacturing equipment, metrology tools, etc.
  • Business
  • Establish and utilize strong working relationships with the EHS, Quality, R&D, Sourcing, Planning, internal support groups, and external suppliers/customers to ensure on-time execution of business plans. Maintain plant business activity awareness, and drive actions necessary to sustain plant integrity. Monitor operational performance and improve systems, processes, and best practices. Aid in development of site operations budget and control direct labor and operational costs. Review and take actions to maintain appropriate inventory dispositions, and product costing accuracy. Continuously improve the site resource model that can be used as a tool to forecast plant production output and annual budgeting.

  • Demonstrated problem solving capabilities to determine root cause and implement effective corrective/preventative action. Strong knowledge and background in statistics, SPC/SQC, Control Plans, 8D methodology including Six Sigma (Green Belt minimum preferred). Demonstrated technical capabilities in chemical batch processing preferred.
  • Business/Managerial
  • Demonstrated skill in developing key metrics and leading team to achieve stretch goals. Ability to provide coaching, clear direction and definition of priorities. Strong organizational skills, including demonstrated skill in managing multi-phase projects. Proven effectiveness while operating in a dynamically changing organization. Demonstrated ability in resolving/addressing difficult situations. Demonstrated ability to understand and own site budget and cost reviews. Effective communicator, including strong presentation skills.
  • Behavioral
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and flexibility while working under pressure of deadlines and dealing with ambiguous situations. Ability to develop solid working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment, and provide coverage of nonstandard work hours with up to 25% travel.
  • Computer
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office. Competent with the knowledge and application of data/statistical analysis software tools (Minitab preferred). Knowledge of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) required, with SAP and Sample Manager experience preferred.

Outstanding Candidates Will Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Polymer, Materials or Chemical Engineering, or related technical field, preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in semiconductor/polymer processing industry preferred, or combination of 5+ years of relevant education and related manufacturing experience.

  • 8+ years experience in an operations, development, or applications engineering function.

  • 1 - 3 years experience in a supervisory/management role preferred with demonstrated project/team leadership required.
