Raytheon Company's Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) Mechanical Engineering Directorate (MED) leads in mechanical hardware design, development and production of radar, sonar, torpedo and combat system equipment. The Mechanical Engineering Directorate uses state-of-the-art tools, processes, technology, and Raytheon Six Sigma principles.
This Section of the Materials Engineering Department directly supports manufacturing operations with technical expertise, laboratory capabilities and industrial and field experience. The group provides technical expertise in metallurgy, composites, coatings, chemistry, welding and nondestructive testing.Engineering support in metals processing disciplines includes:metals selection and validation, machining, sheet metal and joining techniques.The Section participates in supporting operations both within Raytheon facilities and at subcontractor, supplier, field and customer locations.A variety of techniques are used to support dynamic production environments including statistical analysis, R6S tools and Design of Experiments (DoE).This Section also provides a wide variety of capabilities for design development, failure analysis and manufacturing support.Analytical capabilities include metallography, scanning electron microscopy, chemical analysis, construction analysis, ultrasonic, radiography, eddy current and dye penetrant inspection.
The qualified individual with technical expertise in Plating Processes will work in Andover, MA to support all phases of design and manufacturing. Duties will include design for manufacturability reviews, process selection and definition, supplier assessment and recommendation, failure analysis, inspection, plating procedure development, and training of operators and inspectors. The majority of time will be spent supporting manufacturing operations by performing technical assessments, implementing process and design refinements, and monitoring and improving the surface preparation and plating workmanship when applied to different base metals and configurations.
This position can be a Salary Grade G08 or Salary G09 based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the positions. This position will require up to 30% travel both domestically and internationally.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
4+ years of hands-on experience working in finishing and chemical/plating operations
Experience in the area of base material surface treatments such as cleaning processes, development and testing, plating process operator training and evaluations, problem solving workmanship issues and plating inspection.
Experience in the area of metal corrosion (detection, monitoring or mitigation)
Experience with industry standards in the area of metal plating (such as MIL, ASTM or ISO)
Experience with data analysis tools such as Excel, Minitab and SPC
Experience in interpreting engineering drawings, specifications or other technical material and then translating into practical procedural instructions.
Experience working in a manufacturing environment
Experience as a technical liaison between engineering, manufacturing and quality organizations
Experience working major technical projects for performance, cost, and schedule
Basic understanding of surface treatment and plating application processes
Experience with failure analysis and reliability assessment tools
Project management experience including planning, labor estimating, technical reporting and development of new processes/techniques
Must be self-motivated and possess good communication skills
Desire and ability to work as a team member is essential
Practical knowledge of metal processing operations
Demonstrated problem solving skills with the ability to identify root cause and implement appropriate corrective/preventative actions in the plating process manufacturing area.
Experience in training and qualifying operators and inspectors to meet specification requirements.
Testing skills including knowledge of wet chemistry, plating thickness, salt spray, etc.
Basic understanding of paint operations such as surface pretreatment, primer, topcoat application processes
Knowledge of Design of Experiments, Six Sigma and statistical techniques.
