Participate in the management of mortality and risk to F&G's life product portfolio. Provide overall leadership to create, evolve, monitor and adjust underwriting philosophies, guidelines and procedures to meet needs of product. Responsible for leadership, coaching and communicating underwriting standards and guidelines to F&G business partners and third party providers, including auditing to underwriting standards and guidelines. Responsible for monitoring emerging risks due to changes in industry risk assessment practices, regulatory, technological and competitive environment to determine impact on underwriting processes, guidelines and philosophies. Monitors production reports and metrics for adherence to objectives and to assist with process improvement ideas and initiatives.


This role will report to the AVP, Chief Underwriter.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor production reports and metrics; collaborate with underwriting and operations staff to improve results.

  • Manages underwriting vendor relationships and underwriting quality audit program.

  • Provides subject matter expertise for Mergers and Acquisitions and other projects requiring underwriting knowledge and expertise.

  • Collaborate with Actuarial for studies of underwriting programs (simplified issue/Nonmed, accelerated underwriting), underwriting requirement efficacy, and other mortality related activities in order to monitor and measure adherence to the underwriting guidelines assumed in product pricing.

  • Resource for Life Case Management, Sales, Agents and others regarding risk classification issues specific to a case or in general. Case sign off limit $2M.

  • Leads underwriting guidelines group: assure best practices, efficiency, effectiveness and customer experience.

  • Work with Legal to evaluate and develop underwriting practices that comply with enacted laws and regulations.

  • Work with Rate and Form Filing to develop and implement forms that comply with regulations and offer streamlined customer focused experience. (includes E-Forms)

  • Represent underwriting in cross functional teams focused on delivering and enhancing the customer experience.(Sales/Ops/UW/Service; UW/Actuarial/Claims)

  • Support efforts to use data to advance underwriting modernization and auto rules development.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or equivalent experience in lieu of degree.

  • FLMI and FALU designations or equivalent.

  • At least 10 years of Life Underwriting experience.

  • Audit and contestable claims review experience a plus.

  • Experience working with outsourced partners a plus.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate underwriting decisions and quantify the probability of their impact to mortality.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with cross functional business partners.

  • Demonstrated excellent analytical and creative problem solving ability.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with internal and external customers.

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.

  • Proficient in use of PC software. (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ore equivalent)

  • Knowledge of Life Insurance industry, regulatory and compliance environment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This role will require travel on various occasions throughout the year.
