The Opportunity
The Safety Manager is responsible for providing safety leadership and ensuring site actions and activities are aligned with corporate safety standards and government regulations. This includes implementing safety directives, improving safety performance and ensuring safety policies and procedures are followed. This position promotes the vision of safety throughout the organization to assure a best-in-class Safety Management System is in place and properly functioning.
How you will Impact WestRock:
Champion a safety culture focused on safe production, adoption of best practice safety initiatives and eliminating harm to employees. Act as a safety and health subject matter expert and provide technical knowledge, education and training on an ongoing basis to employees at the mill site and within other facilities as needed.
Earn trust and respect of operations and maintenance salaried and hourly employees by providing guidance and assistance as they lead safety in their areas.
Stay abreast of new federal and state safety and health regulations and proactively update policies, procedures and the site Safety and Health Manual to ensure the organization complies with State and Federal requirements. This includes interfacing with OSHA and other regulatory agencies to ensure recordkeeping and reporting requirements are met.
Direct both salary and hourly safety and medical staff, where appropriate.
Manage site employee and contractor safety programs and develop processes and procedures that enhance site-wide safety and training leadership.
Work with all necessary personnel to investigate industrial injuries, near-miss incidences and occupational injuries to determine cause, implement preventive measures and manage return-to-work activities.
Identify best practices, generate and analyze data and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks and raise safety awareness to create a culture of safety.
Perform safety audits of systems, procedures, programs and practices to ensure effectiveness and continued compliance. This includes inspecting facilities, machinery and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure safety regulation compliance.
Manage the development of employee health, wellness and safety programs and training to ensure they meet regulations and support the short- and long-term strategic safety planning and development of the organization.
Coordinate with corporate and regional staff to manage worker's compensation claims and costs to completion, interface with comp carrier, healthcare professionals, HR and employees in return-to-work efforts. Prioritize safety initiatives regarding the worker's compensation claims to reduce injury frequency, severity and lost time incidents.
Competencies:
Demonstrated experience with leading meetings and committees and training personnel to address safety issues.
Supervises safety leaders and advises leadership of safe work practices and ongoing safety concerns. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; performance management; mentoring; disciplinary action; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Position has dotted line reporting responsibilities which include assignment of work and compliance with policies and applicable laws but does not include oversight of individual performance or issues.
Directs and supervises the work of contract employees.
Coordinate projects and provide leadership and assistance to cross-functional project teams. Teams may be made up of internal employees, consultants or temporary staff across several business units.
Manage and maintain operations within allocated budget (staffing and departmental expenses).
What you need to succeed:
Bachelor's Degree in related field (Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene) or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
8+ years' experience of progressive safety and training experience and leadership roles in heavy industry, manufacturing union operation preferred
Certified Occupational Safety Specialist preferred
Experience working with government regulators and a thorough knowledge of federal and state government safety regulations (OSHA, ANSI, NFPA)
Experience implementing behavior-based safety programs and safety management systems that yield a reduction in injuries and OSHA recordable incident rate that sustains a period of time
Ability to influence others to perform their jobs safely and create a culture of safety
Strong leadership and training skills
Strong analytical skills including root cause/failure analysis methodology
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, maintain attention to detail and recognize time constraints
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software programs

The salary range for this position is $124,500.00 - $207,500.00, depending on your role, level, and location. The benefits for this role may include short-term bonus incentive, health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and a number of programs that provide for both paid and unpaid time away from work. Your actual pay will be based on your work location and other factors, such as your skills, experience, and education.
