eBay's Homepage and Personalization engineering team is looking for an outstanding Backend Services engineer and Lead Applied Machine Learning to work with as we redefine the face of eBay. You'll be working with a world class team of engineers, designers, product managers, and analysts to create great products that make a difference on one of the world's most trafficked and loved websites. Our technology stack includes a rapidly evolving Machine Learned Recommendation Framework, Node.js front end app and Scala+Java based back-end. The home page includes key machine learning recommendations like "Recommended for you", "Frequently Searched by you", deals and marketing placements. Our team is highly visible in the organization, has a direct business impact on eBay's top-line revenue, and has customer impact globally. What we work on here impacts the lives of millions every day.

The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of building scalable backend applications. As the lead engineer you will oversee aspects of the software lifecycle : design, development, testing and experimentation. You have demonstrated successful executions of large scale applications with a deep understanding of technology, and solved challenging customer facing problems.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain ebay's home page backend engineering and machine learned recommendation stack

  • Be a hand on technical lead, work closely with a skilled team of engineers

  • Hire top talent, coach and mentor

  • Use best practices to write clean, maintainable code for the project, and create a high performant delightful experience for customers

  • Identify and address performance bottlenecks

  • Be responsible for major projects and features from design phase to coding and testing

  • Work closely with product managers, engineering leaders, scientists and collaborate with partner teams to execute a challenging roadmap

Job Requirements:

  • Exceptional programming skills in, Java, Scala & Python

  • Experience building and consuming horizontally scalable RESTful API's

  • Experience with scrum or other agile software development methodology

  • Experience applying machine learning in a user facing environment like personalization, ranking, or recommendations

  • Experience with big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, Flink, and Kafka is a big plus

  • Deploy and productionalizing trained models, like XGBoost is a plus

  • A constant desire to improve and learn

  • Ability to write reusable and maintainable code

  • Self-driven and ability to get things done

  • Bachelor's degree and 15+ years (or) a MS in Computer Science and 12+ years of software design and relevant experience

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

$168,400 - $262,900

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employees will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
