The Role

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for inventing and shepherding design concepts into viable product offerings. The candidate should demonstrate a history of innovation, technical prowess, project management skills, a strong work ethic, and an ability to work cross-functionally.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical solutions for novel photovoltaic systems.

  • Cross functional participation for product requirement definition

  • Technical concept development / CAD creation of concepts

  • Functional analysis by calculation/FEA

  • Qualification of new technology platforms as mediums for design

  • Prototype realization: hands-on manufacturing and/or project management of internal/external contract manufacturing

  • Feasibility testing: create FMEA/test plans, work cross-functionally with Test. Field Applications, and Reliability Groups to execute test plans. Analyze resultant data

  • Work with Manufacturing Engineering on product DFM. Support pilot rollout for product launch

  • Collaborate with legal team to secure patents for new ideas

Requirements

  • Evidence of exceptional ability

  • BS (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field

  • 3 years of product design experience or an advanced degree in one of the above fields

  • Experience with high volume product design and manufacturing preferred

  • Must be proficient in Solidworks or similar CAD software, 3-D modeling and 3-D prototyping

  • Must be available to travel 10% of time to visit suppliers, customers, and manufacturing lines. Some travel will be international

  • Must be available to commute 20% of time between Fremont and San Rafael Tesla offices

  • Demonstrated record of creative problem solving skills

  • Demonstrated record of successfully managing multiple projects simultaneously

  • Demonstrated record of success working in a cross disciplinary, multi-cultural environment

  • Demonstrated record of success working in a high pressure, tight deadline situation.

  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills

  • Self-Driven, self-motivated, and able to make responsible decisions

Solar Systems Mechanical Engineers have an impressive portfolio of products and projects in which they have held key roles and demonstrated creative solutions to tough problems. Engineers in this role will contribute on large complex projects, and tackle complex research and engineering problems. Responsibilities: * Design, engineer, and develop roofing, solar installation hardware, and accessories * Participate on cross-functional product teams as lead or supporting design engineer * Create detailed CAD drawings (in SolidWorks) and specifications * Manage design change requests and actions * Develop prototypes and coordinate procurement with machine shops and vendors * Perform stress/strain simulations using FEA and hand calculations * Collaborate with Applications Engineers, Product Managers, and Test Engineers to integrate test results, installation issues and customer feedback into design development * Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineers and suppliers to optimize designs for cost, quality, and manufacturability * Lead and participate in research, development, and testing of designs * Collaborate with legal team to secure patents for new ideas Requirements: * BS (or equivalent) Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field * 2+ years of related product experience in industry * Design experience with metal, plastic, composites, coatings for lifetime of 30+ years outdoors * Knowledge of high volume manufacturing processes, such as progressive die stamping, aluminum extrusion, aluminum die casting, investment casting, and injection molding * Must be proficient in Solidworks or similar CAD software, 3-D modeling and 3-D prototyping * Some domestic and international travel may be required to visit Tesla offices, suppliers, customers, and installation sites * Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills * Efficiently manage multiple projects simultaneously * Gracefully work under pressure and tight deadlines * Strong project management and organizational skills, and a keen attention to detail required * The ability to generate new ideas and follow through to completion * Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills * Self-Driven, self-motivated, and able to make responsible decisions * Superior professionalism, judgment, and strong work ethic * Great team player and able to adapt to work in a multi-cultural environment across different departments Tesla Motors Fremont CA
