MPR is actively seeking a Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer for a full time position for our Product Development group. This group is responsible for development of medical and diagnostic devices, as well as consumer products. Work is accomplished by a multi-disciplinary integrated project team, beginning with the product conceptualization, through detailed design, all the way through the process of transferring the design to manufacturing. The job location is at MPR's offices in Alexandria, VA.
Planning and leading the mechanical design efforts of multi-discipline system designs, including coaching and mentoring other engineers through execution of the work.
Developing design solutions for a range of mechanical design challenges across various projects including, for example:
Enclosures (rib features, bosses, snap features, parting lines, etc.).
Mechanical drives, actuators, and mechanisms (springs, belts, pulleys, bearings, gear systems, etc.).
Electromechanical and fluidic systems (motors, encoders, actuators, pumps, etc.).
Creating design files such as 3D CAD models and 2D fabrication drawings.
Procuring, creating system components, as well as assembling prototypes and test systems.
Verifying designs through analysis and testing, and communicating results internally and externally.
Technical Skills and Experience
8-15 years work experience in the field of mechanical design, preferably with development of medical technologies or consumer products.
Experience using solid modeling, analysis, and functional prototyping to develop concepts into detailed designs.
Significant experience using Solidworks in the design of parts and complex assemblies.
Ability to produce 2D part and assembly drawings.
Experience with weldment, sheet metal, surfacing, and routing packages is a plus.
Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Experience developing measurement and test approaches for assessing and confirming design attributes. Experience with mechanical part measurement tools and techniques.
Design for manufacturing experience (injection molding, thermoforming, machining, sheet metal, stamping, etc.) to reduce both part complexity and cost.
Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software such as ANSYS.
Experience with rapid prototyping techniques and technologies (e.g. 3D printing, machining, SLA, SLS).
Experience transferring designs into manufacturing including troubleshooting manufacturer end customer issues.
Able to work closely with electrical engineers and industrial designers to incorporate design constraints from these functional areas into the mechanical design. Experience successfully working in a collaborative integrated design team is essential.
Strong analytical skills with fundamental understanding of the underlying first principles of engineering.
Additional desired experience includes:
Experience working in an ISO 13485 or ISO 9001 quality program.
Experience with Solidworks Enterprise PDM.
Experience with complete product lifecycle (shipping, assembly, maintenance, disposal, etc.).
Experience using machining equipment (mill and lathe).

Ability to multi-task across teams of engineers and managers on various projects.
Ability to oversee more junior engineers work efforts and mentor them.
