Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an experienced Sr. Marine/Sediment scientist with strong technical and management experience to assist with high profile contaminated sediments projects in the Pacific NW and support these projects throughout North America. The primary project work is out of our Seattle, WA and Portland, OR offices; the home office location is flexible.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Managing assessments, remedial investigations, and feasibility studies for complex sediment sites with terrestrial, river, lake, or marine concerns under CERCLA or state programs

  • Designing statistically robust sediment characterization assessments

  • Planning and directing environmental sampling programs and critically evaluating laboratory data

  • Experience with a range of contaminants common at sediment sites, including PCBs, Dioxins/Furans, VOCs, SVOCs, metals

  • Experience with a range of investigation techniques at sediment sites, including surface and subsurface sediment, sediment trap, surface and porewater, fish and benthic organism sampling

  • Experience with bathymetric surveys and fish tracking

  • Developing technically astute Conceptual Site Models

  • Coordinating with engineering staff to provide sufficient data and site characterization for remedial alternative analysis and remedial design

  • Implementing solutions and offering innovations to remediate contaminated sediment sites

  • Engaging in regular client and regulatory communication relating to project management, technical issues, and site characterization strategies.

  • Supervising junior staff in data collection design, implementation, analysis, and documentation preparation for site investigation and monitoring projects

  • Researching and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations

  • Modeling to support remedial analyses or specialized knowledge, such as bioavailability in sediment

  • Training and leadership development in environmental sediment site assessment

  • Qualify for and obtain Project Management accreditation

  • Manage multi-discipline teams to deliver comprehensive studies related to market-driven regulatory actions

  • Actively communicating in high-pace environments requiring organic decision-making

Minimum Requirements

BA/BS in

relevant technical discipline, such as geology, hydrogeology, toxicology, biology + 10 YORE or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
10+ years of experience as an environmental consultant, industry representative, or regulator versed in sediment remediation requirements

Relevant professional license (e.g., LHG, RG, CES, etc.) or ability to obtain in WA and OR

Relevant, recent, direct experience negotiating at multiple PRP sites for site assessment strategies and cleanup program objectives

Experience developing and preparing reports regarding regulatory compliance for hazardous constituents in sediment for submittal and acceptance for technical client and state agency review

Experience with site investigation techniques, developing conceptual site models, and preparing remediation strategies

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to write and review complex technical documents, perform high level review and strategy

Excellent understanding of health and safety requirements to work on water

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with clients, project team, subcontractors and research organizations.

Strong team worker, flexible and hard working

Attention to detail and a thorough approach to work

Consults with Unit Manager on use of Claim Coverage Counsel. Investigates each claim through prompt contact with appropriate parties such as policyholders, accounts, claimants, law enforcement agencies, witnesses, agents, medical providers and technical experts to determine the extent of liability, damages, and contribution potential. Takes necessary statements. Identifies resources for specific activities required to properly investigate claims such as Subrogation, Risk Control, Salvage and fire or fraud investigators and to other experts. Requests through Unit Manager and coordinate the results of their efforts and findings. Verifies the nature and extent of injury or property damage by obtaining and reviewing appropriate records and damages documentation. Keeps effective diary management system to ensure that all claims are handled timely. At required time intervals, evaluates liability and damages exposure, and establishes proper indemnity and expense reserves. Utilizes evaluation documentation tools in accordance with department guidelines. Responsible for prompt, cost effective, and proper disposition of all claims within delegated authority. Negotiates disposition of claims with insureds and claimants or their representatives. Recognizes and implements alternate means of resolution. Maintains claim files, have an effective diary system, and document claim file activities in accordance with established procedures. May attend depositions, and any other legal proceedings, as needed. Updates appropriate parties as needed, providing new facts as they become available, and their impact upon the liability analysis and settlement options. Recognizes cases based on severity protocols to be referred timely to next level claim professional or Major Case Unit. Appropriately deals with information that is considered personal and confidential. Fulfills specific service commitments made to certain accounts, as outlined in Special Account Communication (SAC) instructions, and inquiries from agents and brokers. Represents the company as a technical resource, attends legal proceedings as needed, act within established professional guidelines as well as applicable state laws.
