Job Description

Position Title: Manufacturing Engineer

Job Purpose:

Develops, implements and maintains methods, operation sequences and processes in the manufacture or fabrication of parts, components, sub-assemblies and final assemblies while providing production engineering support services directly to manufacturing.

Nature of Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates manufacturing processes in contract manufacturing plant: Develops, evaluates, and improves manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, materials and parts, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and quality control standards.

  • Support assembly process (drive manufacturing process improvements, general troubleshooting, and corrective actions) for new and existing product lines

  • Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.

  • Ensures internal and external customer assembly requirements are understood and effectively communicated to the manufacturing organization via the development, review, and implementation of manufacturing process documentation.

  • Capable of thinking quickly and reacting to customer issues, understanding internal standard operating procedures (SOP) and industry standard specifications (IPC, AS, etc) related to PCB/PCBA assembly.

  • Providing support for all related areas of manufacturing (Production, MRB, RMA, CAR, etc) while focusing on the customer to continually improve customer satisfaction by providing high quality products in a timely manner.

  • Serve as a central resource with the design, process, manufacturing, test, quality, and product development groups; as the product(s) move to completion and distribution.

  • Actively participate in a cross-functional team environment with effective communication skills, using strong problem solving skills and making sound technical decisions based on experience, knowledge and logical thinking.

  • Provides engineering support to other departments, as needed; working in conjunction with coworkers, including junior engineers and techs, and perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Candidate must be a US Citizen

  • 15 years minimum engineering experience; preferably in Electronics Manufacturing

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • Strong computer skills to include MS Office Suite, CAD/ CAM tools. SolidWorks considered a plus.

  • Solid written/verbal business communication skills.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of Manufacturing Engineers, you will be responsible for supporting fabrication processes for our BE-4 and BE-3U rocket engines. You will translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into consistent manufacturing processes which focus on quality and repeatability. You will work closely with production operators, quality technicians, CNC programmers and engineering counterparts to support machining processes for tight tolerance and complex rocket engine components (i.e. thrust chambers, injectors, turbo pumps, etc). This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable human spaceflight. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. The permanent location of this position is Huntsville, Alabama, and passion for our mission and vision is required! Responsibilities: * Define, develop, implement, optimize, and own machining processes of numerous complex rocket components. * Design, procure, install, and qualify custom manufacturing equipment/fixtures. * Create/modify manufacturing work instructions to disposition non-conformances. * Contribute to fabrication DFMA and PFMEA studies to strengthen the feedback loop between design and build. * Process production data to establish baselines and improvement metrics * Translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into consistent machining processes which can be deployed across multiple manufacturing sites. * Identify, develop, and deploy new machining methods (or refine existing) to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build schedule. * Utilize lean manufacturing methodology for process development and problem solving. * Perform root cause analyses when non-conformances and escapes are identified and deploy corrective actions. * Troubleshoot and operate equipment as required. * Travel required for training and other support activities. (~10%) * Collaborate closely with internal customers (M&P engineers, test technicians, manufacturing engineers, management, and design/analysis engineers) to define requirements and align tools to meet company objectives. * Act as a mentor for more junior engineers * Long hours Qualifications: * 4-year Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university. * 10 - 20 years' manufacturing engineering and machining experience. * 5+ years of experience in writing process work instructions is a must * Strong teamworking skills * Experience working around and with large CNC machining equipment * Understanding of engineering fundamentals for mechanical design and manufacturing including a strong knowledge of GD&T. * Experience machining exotic materials (i.e. super alloys) * Understanding of mechanical drawings and how to interpret them * Extensive past involvement with processing non-conformances and troubleshooting processes. * Strong written, personal, technical, and software skills (CAD, Scheduling, Issue Tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc) * Skills with ERP/MES systems * Ability to develop processes compliant to industry quality systems such as AS9100. * Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
