The opportunity

The Product Development and Engineering job family is the core of Magic Leap's revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap's AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer's needs and our business objectives.

As a Sr Manufacturing Engineer, Process on Magic Leap's Manufacturing Engineering team, you will take a demanding set of functions and turn them into the optics technology that makes the magic work. In this role you will monitor and control eyepieces, fabrication, and product performance for continuous improvement. In addition, you will manage tool productivity, set maintenance plans, and yields, conduct data analysis to improve processes, and manage quality measurement for their tool/process.

This role works closely with Quality and R&D engineers to improve product yield and to troubleshoot process flow from root causes to equipment tuning. In addition, our Manufacturing Engineers own and lead the stability, improvement, and performance functions of the tools, while driving continuous improvement to the tool/process to meet customer satisfaction and the requirements of the manufacturing ramp.

This role is based on our Plantation, FL (HQ) office and will require you to come into our office regularly. Relocation assistance offered.

What you'll do

  • Collaborate with internal product and process development teams to scale wafer etching processes from concept through pilot and volume production.

  • Establish and define critical process performance indicators to deliver repeatable etching processes to meet product specifications.

  • Influence tool selection through concurrent partnership with R&D to define new processes and capabilities to meet near-term and long-term business goals.

  • Subject matter expert in dry and wet wafer etching processes, including working knowledge of materials, processes, and downstream impact on product performance.

  • Sustain and improve newly developed Etch processes.

  • Support product verification through factorial based design and process studies, tradeoff analyses, risk assessment, and integration solutions.

  • Drive machine qualification, including Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA), Process Stability and Capability (CP/CPK, Gauge repeatability / Reproducibility (GR&R), and equipment/process matching.

  • Collect and analyze data coming from the tools to establish statistical process controls, measurement methods, and predictive maintenance to enable efficient manufacturing capability.

  • Lead root cause, troubleshooting, and corrective actions to resolve manufacturing issues through data collection, analysis, and stakeholder reviews.

  • Support continuous improvement from early concept approval through sustaining engineering.

  • Provide technical leadership/guidance for technicians and other manufacturing/equipment engineers on the team; assist and train technicians in basic troubleshooting, PMs, and qualifications.

  • To promote safety, quality, and efficiency, perform complex root cause analysis, including Multifactorial DOE, t-test, ANOVA, Correlation, and Ishikawa diagram.

  • Will be a coach for operators and supervisors on Lean Six Sigma implementation.

  • Facilitate Kaizen teams and/or problem-solving activities on the manufacturing floor with multi-department resources.

  • Optimize use of floor space, materials, personnel, and equipment.

  • Interact with machine vendors to resolve various difficult process engineering issues/problems with limited supervision.

  • Communicate product and equipment status to the manufacturing organization in real time.

  • Has knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; Able to analyze existing operations and propose cost-justified produce and process improvements.

  • Development and implementation of appropriate supporting documentation, SOPs, and process work instructions compliant with current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

The experience you bring

  • 5+ years experience as an R&D or Operations Process Engineer in wafer or semiconductor manufacturing, with acute knowledge of etching and microfabrication technologies.

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Materials, Semiconductor, Mechanical , Process) or closely related experience.

  • Demonstrated delivery of production solutions, including automation, to support high-volume manufacturing.

  • Hands-on experience in the cleanroom, optics, semiconductor materials, and characterization. (Wet Cleans or Lithography a plus).

  • Establish technology readiness and manufacturing transition requirements , identify solutions to meet Demand and Supply Requirements, and milestones to achieve best in class manufacturing processes and high quality/yield deliveries.

  • Partner with operational leadership to establish and refine formal end-to-end product readiness, execution processes, and milestone exit criteria.

  • Knowledge of Process Performance / Measurement System Analysis (OEE, CP, CPK, PPK, GR&R, etc).

  • Process Improvement Mindset.

  • Knowledge of DMAIC and/or 5M Analysis process.

  • Self-directed, with an ability to make sound judgments and take the initiative to establish priorities, meet deadlines, and make decisions/choices within the functional area of responsibility with minimal direct supervision.

  • Demonstrate experience with statistical process control methodologies and engineering analysis tools.

  • Strong written, analytical, personal, technical, and software skills (CAD, Scheduling, Issue Tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, JMP, etc).

  • Strong data analysis, troubleshooting, teamwork, and communication skills.

  • Six Sigma Green Belt minimum.

  • This position requires travel, approximately 10% of working time.

  • Aptitude and desire to learn new skills.

  • Ability to thrive in a multicultural environment.

It's exciting if you also have

  • Opto-mechanical process development, including lithography and silicon manufacturing.

  • Extensive knowledge in surface morphology, inclusive of chemical and molecular interactions due to material and process variables.

  • Industry expertise in etching process technologies

  • Experience with Computer Aided (CAD) or PTC Creo
