Overview

Context

To continue in our mission to create a planet run by the sun, Sunrun must continue to expand its work to create value for the electric grid. We are doing this by winning and executing on contracts where multiple Brightboxes use our intelligent dispatching to reduce outages and create a leaner, cleaner electric grid. The Energy Services team is expanding the use of Brightbox to deliver more value in more places each quarter and must align product, hardware, and software to deliver on these projects.

Objective

The Sr. Manager, Energy Services Programs is the single point of accountability for delivery of tens of millions of dollars of grid value via Brightbox. This person will:

  • Work with the grid services, advanced product and energy services platform teams to align roadmaps to deliver on grid value

  • Create the plan to execute on each grid services opportunity, working both within energy services and across the Sunrun organization

  • Ensure that the plan receives commitment from stakeholders and is continually updated and revised based on real-world changes

  • Successfully deliver to grid services opportunities and drive scalability in grid services value streams

The Sr. Manager, Energy Services Programs will own program management for both opportunity development and program fulfillment for Sunrun's product offering to utilities, ranging from Demand Response programs to Virtual Power Plants.

In helping to secure grid value opportunities the Sr. Manager will:

  • Work closely with the Grid Services team to understand what is needed from Brightbox and other products to fulfill a utility's objectives in each program

  • Own, structure, and keep updated the specifications of the solution Sunrun will provide for each grid services opportunity

  • Collaborate with the Advanced Products, Software Products, Sales, Marketing, and Operations teams to align functionality to each specification, and create a full representation of what will be needed to fulfill a given Brightbox program

  • Own the timeline and specifications for program delivery, intimately understanding the interplay of vendors, software development, utility program changes, and Sunrun internal prioritization to ensure the opportunity is on track

  • Determine the total work needed to deliver the program needs, and note where and when this differs from planned delivery on a BAU basis

  • Gain alignment on any changes or additions to functionality required to fulfill the program, and ensure these changes are fully committed across Sunrun by the time a commitment to the program is finalized

In program fulfillment, the Sr. Manager will:

  • Ensure the delivery of each program is on track, and problem-solve any issues that arise

  • Own a master list of the capabilities needed for each committed program, making changes and facilitating tradeoffs if functionality delivery timelines change

  • Tracking and test each functionality release to ensure that the program can be delivered as intended

  • Partner with the Grid Services Program Manager to track delivery to each utility program

  • Over multiple programs, architect and templatize Sunrun's capabilities so that delivery of individual programs is based on a standardized toolkit minimizing the burden of customization

  • Develop action plans and cross-functional alignment to remedy shortfalls with an aim to overachieve to program targets

As Sunrun continues to grow both the types of offerings it is able to provide and the breadth of partnerships, the Sr. Manager will be responsible for building a team that coordinates the delivery of grid services programs, continually making the process more efficient and scalable.

Qualifications:

  • Process Management, Program Management, or Project Management Experience

  • 3+ years experience constructing and managing complex processes, process changes, programs or projects coordinating multiple stakeholder groups in technical project/program delivery.

  • Demonstrated ability to construct, organize and document multiple work streams enabling scaling and replication. Proven ability to construct project charters, implement tools across an entire project lifecycle, and delegate across cross-functional teams.

  • Strong eye for potential issues and ability to think through multiple scenarios and catch issues before they happen

  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage dashboards, program analytics, reports, and project milestones, and to maintain and manage diverse sets of tasks and priorities.

  • Ability to rapidly master new and varied operating requirements and incorporate into existing capabilities

  • Passion for continually improving program management to deliver better outcomes, more efficiently, at larger scale and with higher levels of sophistication.

  • Qualities and track record of operating with:

  • Obsession with solving difficult challenges to enable new clean energy solutions for the electric grid, exemplifying the Sunrun values of Curiosity and Integrity.

  • Ability to quickly learn, then radically simplify, complex energy market concepts for communication to internal stakeholders and ultimately to Sunrun's residential customers.

  • Ability to confront and overcome complexity and obstacles with creative solutions to deliver necessary outcomes while leading teams through influence, and developing open and trusting relationships.

  • Ability to communicate directly and constructively and drive consensus, across business levels and stakeholder groups inclusive of technical and executive audiences. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Industry Expertise

  • Experience with the following is highly desirable: Residential or commercial solar and/or storage development, wholesale energy market operations, demand response or other utility customer programs (management or implementation), customer success functions.

  • Experience as a hardware and/or software product manager, or working closely with leaders in those roles

  • Experience with the following is a plus: Google BigQuery, SQL, Salesforce CRM or other CRM that includes unique reporting and dashboard construction, project management software such as Asana, Confluence, Monday.com, GIS Software/Google Earth.

  • Education: B.S or B.A (minimum) in Engineering, Operations, Business Administration or equivalent practical experience.
