Essential Job Responsibilities:

This exciting position will have a broad range of responsibilities at various levels, including team leadership, project management, and hands-on work in a machine shop/laboratory setting:

  • Day-to-day management responsibilities of the R&D tooling & molding group, including providing strong technical direction, mentorship, and clear prioritization for a large number of innovative projects and a broad range of team member disciplines

  • Responsibility of providing oversight to the group while allowing individual growth, experimentation, and freedom to pursue new, high-risk, high-reward approaches to part design, tool design, and processing

  • Project management responsibilities as the single-point of contact for the group to coordinate with the Innovation Core, Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering/Product Transfer/NPI, and Manufacturing/Production groups to receive, review, and prioritize new project requests while balancing resources and budget

  • Responsible for executing on projects from concept through design lock and transferring to Manufacturing Engineering/Product Transfer/NPI for Validation

  • Make key decisions on balancing the utilization of external and internal resources to execute on projects, including the management of outside vendors

  • Fully contribute as a technical tooling team member, including actively driving and contributing to part/tool/mold design reviews, setting of part specifications, choice of polymer material, and design of slides, gates, and inserts

  • Fully contribute as a process engineering team member, including actively driving and contributing to molding process parameter choices, choice of press equipment, and choice of runner systems

  • Roll up sleeves and participate in tool making & molding as a technical team member

  • Leadership and communication responsibilities across the company at VP & Director levels to provide status updates, communicate challenges & successes, and escalate issues and resolutions

  • Maintain documentation of parts & processes according to ISO, CE-IVD, and FDA Quality standards

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by enforcing procedures, rules, and regulations

  • Contribute overall to the objectives of the new R&D tooling & molding group as follows: 1) enable delivery of small volume, quick-turn design iterations to support Cepheid IVD plastics R&D projects, 2) ensure Cepheid has the most up-to-date skills, knowledge, equipment, and processes for high-quality plastics molding, and 3 ) ensure parts & processes are designed for manufacturability to enable accelerated commercialization

  • Education or Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years experience working hands-on as an apprenticed toolmaker or certified process engineer in either a tool shop or molding operation setting

  • 10 years of demonstrated experience managing, leading, and mentoring high performing R&D teams in the design and production of injection molded plastics parts in a medical device/IVD quality-controlled environment

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Innovative, out-of-the-box problem solver capable of overcoming challenging and complex problems in a fast-paced environment

  • Hands-on experience with standard tool making processes & equipment, including trad milling/lathe, CNC milling/lathe, wire EDM, sinker EDM, TIG welding, and grinding/polishing

  • Hands-on experience with standard injection molding processes and equipment, including knowledge of hot runner systems and scientific molding approaches

  • Hands-on experience with standard metrology process & equipment, including physical and optical profilometry

  • Proficiency in standard CAM is required, MasterCAM preferred

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks is required

  • Strong leadership qualities, leading by example

  • Excellent communication, organization, and project management (incl. budgeting) skills, including the demonstrated ability to communicate and coordinate efficiently across multiple functions and employee levels

  • Basic skills in Microsoft Project & Visio to create Gantt charts, schedules, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable medical device/IVD quality regulations (ISO, FDA) and Company operating procedures, processes and policies

  • Must have ability to meet deadlines on multiple concurrent projects

  • Skills in failure investigation and root cause analysis required

  • Basic knowledge of design control, risk analysis, statistics, and design of experiment (DOE)

  • Basic knowledge of mold flow analysis/modeling

  • Knowledge of plastics ultrasonic welding preferred

  • Knowledge of plastics bonding & film sealing preferred

  • Hands-on experience in micro CNC milling preferred

  • Knowledge of MEMS/silicon micromachining preferred

Physical Demands:

  • Typical laboratory work, typical machine shop activities, and frequent travel between Cepheid Lodi, Cepheid Sunnyvale, and other external vendors.

Preferred Requirements:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related area preferred
