Job Description:

Vertex is seeking a talented and motivated individual to join its Global Health Economics & Outcomes Research (HEOR) group in Boston, MA. The primary responsibility of the Senior Manager is to help shape and execute on strategies that optimize the supporting evidence and value proposition of Vertex's alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) pipeline assets through each stage of the development, launch and post-launch phases. This position reports to the Senior Director of HEOR for this program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and execution of health economic and outcomes research tactics to support AATD commercialization strategies and demonstrate value to key stakeholders

  • Collaborate with Clinical Development and Medical Affairs colleagues on the integration of economic, health-related quality of life/patient reported outcome, and resource use parameters into Phase III protocol development, Real World Evidence prospective studies and post-launch development programs

  • Support the economic modeling, comparative effectiveness, meta-analyses/systematic reviews, and value dossier development in preparation for launch readiness

  • Follow best practices for HEOR data collection, analysis, modeling, dissemination and publication; ensure the high quality of data collection and analysis

  • Effectively communicate health economic and outcomes research findings internally and externally


  • An advanced degree (e.g., PhD, PharmD, MPH, MS) and an educational focus in the areas of health economics or outcomes research.

  • 3 - 5 years of current experience with health economics and outcomes research within the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry, in either a consulting or pharmaceutical environment

  • Working knowledge of epidemiology, PROs, reimbursement and pricing environment, economic modeling, clinical development and commercial activities desired

  • A track record of success functioning in dynamic, matrix environments with the ability to multitask seamlessly

  • Strong attention to detail and quality focused

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to effectively present technical data and complex concepts to diverse audiences

POSITION OBJECTIVES: This position functions within Takeda's Global Evidence and Outcomes (GEO) team, which contributes to the successful development and commercialization of new, innovative therapies. The purpose of this position is to provide support for driving innovation within the GEO organization. While Takeda organizes itself into teams focused on neurosciences, gastroenterology, oncology and rare diseases, this role will support all disease areas. As a member of the GEO innovation team, this role will contribute to Takeda's strategic partnerships with external organizations, suggest and execute sustainable innovative solutions for evidence generation including novel analytical methods, observational study designs, and new ways of working. This role will keep the abreast with the state of the art in outcomes research including changes in the regulatory and payer requirements for real world evidence. Position objectives are: * To collaborate and align internally with other Takeda R&D and Business Unit teams within a multi-disciplinary framework to meet the needs of GEO organization. * To collaborate and contribute to external strategic partnerships to meet the needs of Takeda and disseminating the information gathered from such engagements to Takeda stakeholders. * To design, execute and communicate outputs of appropriate tactical activities supporting innovation within GEO, including novel study designs and analytical methods. * To communicate findings from these activities to relevant internal and external audiences as effectively as possible. POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES: * Work within a multidisciplinary, matrixed organization to develop and execute successful strategies and plans to support GEO organization. * Using epidemiologic and observational research expertise, design, implement and communicate results of outcomes research studies, including epidemiologic research, that help achieve product-specific objectives. * Represent the GEO function and provide strategic input on corporate cross-functional teams related to public-private partnerships to enable and support innovation within GEO organization. * Collaborate and partner with key internal stakeholder colleagues to ensure priorities and strategies are aligned. * Prepare, review, and publish reports/ white papers reflecting ongoing or completed work. * Align with internal stakeholders to meet the evidence and outcomes research needs of local operating companies. * Communicate with relevant internal and external audiences, which may include regulators, health care providers/practitioners, HTA authorities/payers, patients and others. * Ensure findings are communicated effectively, and as appropriate in conference presentations, publications, dossiers and other means. EDUCATION, BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: * Experience in one or more disciplines within health outcomes research in Takeda-relevant therapeutic areas is preferred. Demonstrated experience in driving business process transformation and organizational culture change is highly desirable. * Combination of academic training and practical experience in outcomes research is required. This may be consist of: * Doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D., Sc.D. or Dr.P.H.) in a relevant discipline such as, but not limited to, health services research, health outcomes research, epidemiology, pharmacy administration, public health, economics, statistics or decision sciences, plus five years practical experience * Clinical degree (e.g., in medicine, pharmacy, nursing) and a master's degree in a related discipline (as noted above), plus five years practical experience * Master's degree in a related discipline (as noted above), plus eight years practical experience. * Practical experience (number of years as noted above) in performing outcomes research, in any setting, including life sciences company, research organization, academic institution or governmental agency, is required. * Experience should include the conduct of outcomes research studies, and the communication of study findings to internal and external audiences. * Familiarity with the role and importance of epidemiology and outcomes research in the multi-disciplinary drug development and commercialization environment and process (involving multiple stakeholders) is expected. * Ability to understand regulatory and HTA/payer challenges for Takeda products; and to critically review data and assimilate strategies that take such environments into consideration is required. * Demonstrated expertise in at least one area of outcomes research (such as, but not limited to, retrospective or prospective observational studies, patient-reported outcomes/health-related quality of life assessment, literature synthesis/meta-analysis) is highly desirable. * Demonstrated experience in conducting or interpreting statistical analysis is useful. * Excellent qualitative and quantitative epidemiological skills, including study design analysis and interpretation of data from observational research. * Experience in conducting outcomes research in different geographic regions is desirable. * Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a multicultural and cross functional team environment is expected. * Broad experience in collaborating with research partners and in managing multiple tasks and complex projects is very desirable. * Ability to communicate scientific evidence, with strong written and verbal presentation skills, is required. * Experience interacting with regulator and/or HTA/payer policy-makers is highly desirable. * Record of high-quality, peer-reviewed outcomes research publications is preferred. * Experience in influencing mid-/ senior-level management and diverse key stakeholders to drive organizational change is very desirable. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: * Takeda is a global company with corporate headquarters in Japan, and with global research and development activities run from Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. * Travel to meetings (sometimes requiring overnight stays) involving Takeda colleagues, research partners, and/or external stakeholders is a requirement of the position. * Some international travel may be required. * Time commitment expected for travel is approximately 10 - 25 %.
