The Position

The Senior Manager of Total Rewards / Compensation reports directly to the Vice President, Corporate Human Resources, and will lead and support the analysis, design, communication, implementation, and execution of compensation programs/tools. While this individual will not be functionally responsible for Benefits, this person will need to work closely with the Director of Benefits to ensure a "total rewards approach" to planning and communication. This individual will conduct analyses and make recommendations related to base pay and support the development of annual incentive and long-term incentive plans to assist in attracting, retaining, rewarding, and motivating talent across VCA. This individual will provide guidance and consultation on internal equity, as well as job families, classifications, salary progression, and supervisory and technical promotional models. This person oversees all market pricing activities to ensure internal equity and external competitiveness. This person will work cross-functionally with other leaders within Operations, Finance, Payroll, Human Resources, Recruiting, and other departments to execute projects and initiatives.

Initial Focus

As this is a new role, the Senior Manager of Total Rewards will initially focus on the following:

  • Inventory and review our current compensation policies and practices base pay, merit, commission programs, allowances, stipends, bonus programs, and other various incentive programs

  • Build effective compensation communication tools for both existing and new employees

  • Provide guidance and hands-on support of Workday Compensation plans and on-going enhancements to compensation-related business processes and approval routing

  • As determined by the CEO and VP of Corporate Human Resources, will support any compensation-related transition activities with Petcare and Mars Inc.

  • Provide analytical support to key Total Rewards projects and proposals (i.e., minimum wage analysis, etc.)

On-going Accountabilities

The Senior Manager of Total Rewards will serve as the point person for all of VCA's total rewards / compensation programs and initiatives. This role will work with internal stakeholders to continuously identify and assess potential improvements to compensation plans, policies and communication.

Specific job responsibilities include:

  • Subject matter expert in all areas of compensation overall philosophy, salary structure management, market intelligence/trends & pay practices, job evaluation systems and pay progression strategy, competitive pay positioning (both internally and externally), variable/short-term incentive programs, sales compensation plans and recognition programs

  • Manage all compensation-related set-up and structures within Workday

  • Ensure streamlined and clear processes between Workday compensation plan set-up and payroll processes

  • Monitor internal, external, and industry compensation data/trends to ensure competitiveness and effectiveness of our compensation programs

  • Research and support of the implementation of compensation programs that may include job titles / families / functions, career progression models, short-term incentives, and salary structures

  • Monitor the effectiveness of existing compensation polices, guidelines, & procedures

  • Oversee job classification processes and compliance

  • Establish and maintain an effective/streamlined communication strategy for all compensation and incentive programs, including documentation of all plan guidelines and FAQs

  • Support managers and executives during annual salary and bonus cycles

  • Support the recruiting and HR teams by consulting on offer packages, maintaining benchmarking spreadsheets, etc.

  • Participate in salary surveys, gather & maintain compensation data on various pay practices at benchmark institutions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (minimum) in Business, Finance, Human Resources or related field

  • 8+ years of HR experience with a specialization in compensation

  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare industry

  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership role

  • Experience in building compensation function and programs from the "ground up"

  • Experience working directly with senior management

  • Customer-oriented with an appreciation for the unique issues faced by a large, diverse, decentralized company

  • Action-oriented; ability to multi-task and collaborate

  • Familiarity with Total Rewards principles or experience in Total Rewards environment

  • Strong knowledge of employment law and compliance (federal and state)

  • Quantitative, analytical mindset with outstanding Excel skills

  • Proven ability to present technical HR information to leadership in clear, compelling terms

  • Strong functional knowledge of performance management

  • Ability to work as a part of a team; as well as independently

  • Ability to work well within a confidential environment with sensitive information
