Job Title: Sr. Localization Engineer, Autonomous Driving

Location: San Jose, CA

Overview

Team charter

The Advanced Technologies and Autonomy team is responsible for delivering highly available, high quality systems to enable NIO's Autonomous driving vehicles. Our mission is to provide the next generation of hardware, software and algorithmic solutions. This includes but not limited to sensing, compute, storage as well as vehicle controls and safety system compute.

What the team works on

  • Autonomy hardware and software architecture

  • Design, development, integration, and test of autonomous compute and sensing hardware

  • Mass storage and Event Data Recorders

  • Vehicle and Safety Controller HW and related functions

  • Environment and Sensor modeling and simulation

  • Autonomy Al and Controls

  • Autonomy R&D Tools

  • Autonomy compute and sensing HW and SW redundancy

  • Sensing, GPS and IMU hardware, software, and integration

  • Autonomy compute communication (sensing, compute, and controller inter-ECU communication)

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and implement state-of-the-art localization algorithms for autonomous cars.

  • Responsible for developing algorithms and tools for Laser- and vision-based mapping, Place detection, Global localization, Lifelong mapping, SLAM, Visual Odometry etc.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Computer Science/ Computer Engineering/Statistics/Mathematics/Physics.

  • Industry experience with Localization/Mapping, SLAM, Visual Odometry, Computer Vision and/or Machine Learning,

  • Industry experience of functional programming with C/C++.

  • Knowledge of probabilistic filtering and nonlinear optimization techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science/ Computer Engineering/Statistics/Mathematics/Physics.

  • Demonstrated ability in the application of localization/mapping in real-world applications.

  • ROS/OpenCV experience.

  • Experience in Sensor Fusion is a plus.

  • Experience with parallel/grid computing is a plus.

  • Strong oral and written skills.

  • Experience with Agile software development.

  • Previous experience in the automotive industry is preferred, but not required.

You will help our software for perception, mapping &amp; localization and motion planning &amp; control run more efficiently on existing hardware. You will optimize and increase computational efficiency for neural networks using techniques such as weight reuse, lower precision computations. You will investigate and prototype different architectures such as from Nvidia GPU, Intel CPU, FPGA, AI chips and embedded computing platforms and architect the transition of software stack from desktop to an embedded platform</p><p><strong>Requirements</strong></p><ul> <li>MS/PhD in computer science, robotics, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience</li> <li>3+ years of experience in software development using C++/Python.
