Position Summary:

As a Senior Litigation Counsel, you will spearhead the management and resolution of a broad range of litigation matters across various global business units. Litigation and claims will include but not limited to, commercial, intellectual property, privacy, and employment issues. This role demands a strategic, influential communicator with exceptional negotiation skills and the ability to adapt and perform effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

  • Complex Problem Solving: Skilled in handling intricate issues, applying in-depth analysis, and generating solutions that align with departmental and company goals.

  • Applied Knowledge: Advanced experience and professional knowledge used to develop solutions, guide new policy development, and understand interdisciplinary relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee litigation matters globally, including case strategy development and execution, in collaboration with internal stakeholders to achieve favorable outcomes.

  • Conduct legal research, analyze complex issues, and provide strategic recommendations to management.

  • Draft and review legal documents and manage external counsel and litigation vendors, ensuring efficient and cost-effective legal representation.

  • Develop litigation budgets and ensure outside legal fees align to expectations and pre-approved budget authority.

  • Stay informed on legal developments affecting the organization and advise on risk mitigation measures.

  • Provide guidance and support to internal stakeholders on litigation-related matters, including risk assessment and mitigation strategies.

  • Represent the company in court proceedings, arbitrations, mediations, and other dispute resolution forums as needed, engaging in negotiations with opposing counsel or counterparties.

  • Develop and oversee the company's discovery and litigation hold processes, guiding custodians regarding information retention and discovery.

  • Advise on legal disputes, manage subpoena responses, and handle insurance claims, ensuring maximum recovery.

  • Coordinate insurance claims and carrier communications related to litigation to ensure largest recovery of legal costs.

  • Lead and/or support internal investigations and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of litigation experience in a reputable law firm and/or in-house, with demonstrated trial and deposition expertise.

  • Proficient and demonstrated ability in managing litigation matters end-to-end with minimal oversight, including electronic discovery.

  • Excellent judgment, client-relations, and teamwork skills, with the ability to work well with outside counsel.

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and an active license to practice in at least one US state.

At the time of posting, Rakuten expects the base compensation for this role to be within the range shown below. Individual compensation will vary based on job-related factors, including the skills, qualifications, and experience of the successful candidate as well as business need and geographic location. The successful applicant for this role will be eligible for discretionary bonus, health, vision, dental insurance, 401k matching, PTO, Volunteer Time Off (VTO), and other employee benefits as the company implements.
