Fueled by a fundamental belief that having access to financial services creates opportunity, PayPal is committed to democratizing financial services and empowering people and businesses to join and thrive in the global economy. Initially conceived and designed for web payments, PayPal's mobile and point of sale solutions have altered the payments landscape by blurring the lines between ecommerce and traditional brick and mortar commerce. PayPal's innovative technology and approach to payments, coupled with an increasingly complex and demanding legal and regulatory environment, provide robust career opportunities for lawyers motivated and driven by creative business partners and a fast paced, innovative culture.

The Global Product & Engineering Group within PayPal Legal is seeking a high caliber and energetic lawyer, with experience in financial services regulation and technology to join our team. This lawyer will primarily support PayPal's merchant product offerings and provide legal and regulatory guidance as the product team develops, implements and updates PayPal merchant products and services.

Responsibilities:

  • Partnering with the business as a trusted advisor and providing proactive and solution-oriented legal and regulatory guidance to enable the product and engineering teams to develop, enhance, implement, and market PayPal products and services

  • Working cross-functionally to identify, analyze and mitigate risks (and maximize opportunities) related to the introduction of new PayPal products and services and/or expansion into new geographies

  • Interpreting obligations under commercial agreements with merchants and partners as they relate to PayPal merchant product and services

  • Reviewing, updating and drafting PayPal user agreements, privacy statements and other external facing terms and conditions, in partnership with other members of the PayPal Legal team

  • Reviewing and advising on the development of external facing marketing and user content and user experiences

  • Working with Enterprise Risk, Compliance and Legal team colleagues across our global organization in the assessment of applicable regulations and development of company standards

  • Representing PayPal's interests and actively managing external counsel, as appropriate

  • Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders across the global organization

  • Providing training to business partners on relevant topics

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 or more years of experience practicing either in-house (or in an equivalent setting) or at a reputable law firm, with at least 4 years of those years focused on either payments law, the FinTech space, or financial services regulatory analysis in an international environment

  • Ability to provide timely, concise and business-focused legal advice on payments law, including federal and state consumer financial laws and regulations like Regulation E; data privacy laws; and consumer protection laws

  • Ability to provide legal and regulatory guidance on the design and modification of products, proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies, review product user experiences to ensure legal compliance and proper disclosures, and help document guidance for consumption by members of both the Legal and Product and Engineering teams

  • Familiarity with, and strong interest in, PayPal, Venmo, mobile and alternative payments, emerging payments technology and the payments industry

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced international environment and to tolerate change and ambiguity

  • Ability and drive to take ownership of projects and tasks which, in many cases, will be matters of first impression

  • Comfortable with gray areas and interpreting and applying the law in unsettled contexts

  • Confident self-starter with strong interpersonal and organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to effectively and proactively provide sound legal advice, exercise good business judgment, work well with other lawyers globally, senior management and cross functional stakeholders, and implement policies and processes

  • Facilitate a team-based approach to subject matter management and knowledge sharing, and comfort with a flexible, agile environment that emphasizes collaboration and team performance over management hierarchy

  • Creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to stay calm under challenging circumstances

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills and ability to work both in teams and independently

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously, with effective resolution of conflicting priorities

  • Prior product legal experience in the technology or financial services space and/or working with strategic partners to launch joint product experiences recommended, but not required
