Job Summary

Tate & Lyle is looking for a Senior Food Scientist in Global Ingredient Technology who will conduct technical research to support the growth of sales of Tate & Lyle ingredients. This position requires a technical professional with at least 5 years of experience in the food and flavour industry with knowledge of food systems and ingredient functionality. Experience with sweeteners, flavours and taste modification is required. The candidate must have strong communication and interpersonal skills and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, customer-centric environment across a broad range of applications. Contribution is measured through quality growth in the technical project pipeline and conversion of technical opportunities to sales. Responsible for limited travel to customer locations for presentations, consultations, pilot trials, and ongoing project support.

  • Design and conduct scientific research studies in the area of sweeteners, flavours and taste modifications.

  • Conceptualize new product ideas, technical applications and innovative solutions to problems

  • Lead technical research projects and provide/resource technical expertise to address company and customers' technical issues.

  • Develop and foster relationships with contacts in industry to build recognition for Tate & Lyle ingredients/technologies.

  • Leverage technical leads/opportunities to build a strong project pipeline in cooperation with R&D functions.

  • Independently review projects, research results, and conclusions in order to move NPD through development stages.

  • Work cross functionally within Tate & Lyle (e.g. Research, Applications, Technical Service, Analytical, Product Management, etc.) .

  • Use ingredient knowledge within categories or applications to support customer projects as needed within regions.

  • Contribute market intelligence/trends within platform area, food category or application area

  • Travel up to 25% (combination road and air)


  • An exhibited dedication to safety and commitment to making safety a number one priority

  • Master's Degree is required (Ph.D. degree preferred), preferably in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering or related area of study.

  • 5-15 years of experience in the food industry. Food formulation experience and ingredient functionality required.

  • Sound knowledge of food science, food chemistry, food microbiology and food processing

  • Thrive and be comfortable working in a dynamic, changing and evolving environment.

  • Ability to navigate a matrixed environment and build strong relationships with internal peers, sales and marketing and customers

  • Good problem solving skills and quick decision making capability.

  • Interest in developing market knowledge by category or application to communicate customer needs to internal departments

  • Outstanding communication, presentation and interpersonal skills

  • Experience with sweeteners and/or flavours with demonstrated sensory experience

One of the initial programs would be the Wall of Analytics. This position will be responsible for participating in all aspects of data science tasks required for synthesizing data, reporting insights, designing and implementing analytical solutions. She/he will work independently and contribute to the immediate team and to other teams across business. Essential Responsibilities: Build an understanding of the business needs that enables the team to identify data needs and address critical data issues. Identify data analysis and visualization needs. Process, analyze and synthesize customer data from multiple sources. Explore data and discover patterns, meaningful relationships, anomalies, and trends. Store structured analytical information in data-warehouse and ensure information is cataloged and easily available to users for direct consumption or integration with analytical systems. Research methodology, tools and frameworks for data analytics. Assist team members and stake holders to deliver value added solutions through advanced analytics and modeling techniques. Write good quality reports and presentations on analytical projects. Collaborate with internal and external customers on all stages of the analytical project. Interact with data scientists, present technical ideas, seek feedback and participate in technical design with other members of the project team. Engage in technical discussions; participate in technical designs and present technical ideas. Be an expert in core analytical structures as well as advanced analytic algorithms and implement them using language of choice.
