Sr. Financial Analyst

The Department of Biostatistics is seeking a Sr. Financial Analyst. This position coordinates and participates in the development and monitoring of the budgeting & finance activities in the Bloomberg School of Public Health's Department of Biostatistics. Develops financial reports for forecasting and result analysis to improve the operational and financial effectiveness of multiple business lines, including general funds, service center, sponsored, discretionary, and designated accounts. Assists in financial planning and cost analyses in collaboration with departmental leadership, faculty, as well as personnel within the School's Business Office. Provides leadership and training for new and existing Department of Biostatistics finance staff. Ensures departmental financial efficiencies and compliance with JHU and agency regulations and restrictions. This position reports to the Department Administrator.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and assumes a leadership role in the annual operating and service center budgets for submission to the Dean's Office.

  • Responsible for the monthly reporting, monitoring, and reprojections of departmental budgets, including general funds, service center, sponsored, discretionary, and designated funds.

  • Analyzes complex financial data and extracts and defines relevant information; interprets data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project a financial probability.

  • In combination with the institution's accounting system data, designs financial reports utilizing software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, cost-accounting. systems, statistical and graphics packages, and assists in the dissemination of information to leadership, faculty, and other analysts.

  • Implements quality control and processes improvements with regard to overall business process.

  • Meets routinely with Department leadership to share financial results, discuss areas of improvement, and propose plans to address weaknesses.

  • Performs monthly reconciliation of departmental non-sponsored funding and select sponsored accounts.

  • Ensures accuracy and completion of monthly/quarterly service center billing and adheres to federal service center policies and regulations.

  • Manage and oversee Department's Control Salary balance. Provide monthly reports to leadership and responsible staff. Work with team to reduce control salary balances and identify and resolve barriers to reducing.

  • Responsible for the management and forecasting of select faculty salary allocations and sponsored accounts. This includes a large multi-center grant and associated subaward. management, other support documentation, effort reporting and progress reports, in collaboration with the grant's program coordinator.

  • Assist with review and approval of travel reimbursements, check requests, and transfers for non-sponsored accounts and ensure compliance with government regulations, tax laws, and JHU travel policies. Seek additional back-up documentation and business justifications from faculty and students when necessary.

  • Review/approve monthly purchasing card transactions, ensuring correct accounts/GLs are charged, and maintain records for compliance. This includes having full knowledge of JHU PCard and Purchasing policies.

  • Resolve expense posting errors and communicate proper expense allocation.

  • Prepare and process payroll transactions needed to allocate salary to correct accounts.

  • Prepare non-payroll cost transfers, KB15N's, and other journal entries.

  • Review monthly telecom, IT, copier, and other misc. charges and ensure proper accounts/users are charged.

  • Functions as a departmental resource, answering finance related questions and assisting other analysts with training.

  • Provides back-up to sponsored projects team during staff shortages and high-volume periods. This may include assisting with grant applications, as needed.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.

  • Five years progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience.

  • Additional education (master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of SAP accounting system practice and implementation within the Hopkins environment desirable.

Starting Salary Range: $62,900 - $110,100 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
