Position Summary:

The Senior Application Engineer (SAE) will be an integral member of the Life Sciences (LS) Customer Development Team within Daylight Solutions' Sales and Marketing group. This critical function will report directly to the Sr. Director of the Scientific and Life Sciences Instrumentation Line of Business, and will be responsible for ensuring successful product evaluation and adoption by our LS customers. As an ambassador for Daylight's LS products and services, brand, and customer-centric culture, the SAE will operate at all times with high-integrity and provide exceptional pre- and post-sales technical product support. In support of growing and sustaining the LS business, the SAE will initiate and cultivate long-lasting relationships with respected technical staff, key opinion leaders and technology influencers within key accounts and across the LS industry. Furthermore, the SAE will often embed themselves within a customer's lab for multiple days at a time acting as an extension of the customer's analytical, development or production team in order to ensure their successful product evaluation and wide adoption across multiple organizations.

The customer development process typically begins with the SAE conducting a customer visit to provide a seminar and product demonstration followed by the development and documentation of application requirements and product acceptance criteria. The SAE will then, in close coordination with the business development manager, negotiate and execute an evaluation plan necessary to win the business opportunity. The SAE will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data results consistent with the evaluation plan and the current business needs. After a successful customer installation, the SAE will be responsible for maintaining a close scientific relationship with the customer through periodic visits and ongoing post-sales application and service support.


  • Be a key member of the new business capture team by actively participating in appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings.

  • Develop trusted technical contacts with the customer and, where appropriate, acting essentially as an extension of the customer's application team in support of business capture or retention.

  • Actively support the pursuit of new business capture by developing and presenting new concepts, technologies or applications as part of Business Development and Program Management team.

  • Interface directly with key opinion leaders, scientists and principal investigators at key Life Sciences and pharmaceutical accounts to define and execute product demonstrations and experimental plans within a pre-defined scope of work.

  • Provide 'voice-of-customer' through documentation of application requirements and product specifications needed to capture or regain new business.

  • Interact with technical management, other professionals, technicians and support personnel to coordinate, recommend and confer regarding technical activities and progress.

  • Perform product installations, training, and post-sales support.

  • Ability to complete a technical project independently and mentor and coach other application engineers.

  • Review customer specifications and requirements, and develop experimental designs, which balance the needs of the company and the customer, including cost as a key design variable.

  • Ability to lead major problem resolution efforts and support regaining or attaining customer partner status.

  • Provide prompt field service and troubleshooting support as necessary.

  • Author or co-author high-visibility scientific articles and application notes independently or in close partnership with customers.

  • Perform data reduction and analysis using spectral analysis and chemometric techniques (e.g. PCA, HCA, LDA).

  • Author accurate and succinct customer-facing reports in a timely manner.

  • Give technical seminars, webinars and customer education workshops.

  • Attend and support tradeshows, seminars, and workshops by giving talks, live demonstrations, and assisting in setup and teardown of equipment and marketing materials.

  • Create technical content, including scientific articles and application notes for use in marketing campaigns.

  • May mentor and coach the work of others as assigned and function as a peer leader for mentoring and expansion of the applications team.

  • Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization.


  • Bachelor's degree with 10 years' experience.

  • Ph.D. in analytical or physical chemistry or biochemistry preferred.

  • Greater than 5 years of experience in a customer-facing, field application scientist/engineer role serving key Biopharma/Biotech accounts.

  • A motivated self-starter that is capable of rapidly developing rapport with customer base

  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to effectively present complex biologic and spectroscopic scientific data to audiences with varying backgrounds and education level.

  • Experience using mathematical and statistical software tools such as MATLAB or Python.

  • Extensive knowledge of macromolecular liquid chromatographic separation and characterization techniques.

  • Familiarity with trending techniques in Bio-Process Analytics.

  • Hands-on experience working with spectroscopic instruments.

  • Capable of travelling globally to customer sites.

  • Excellent communicator with a track record of relaying VOC feedback to internal team.

  • Comfortable with troubleshooting on-the-spot to develop customer applications.

  • Knowledge of microfluidics and manipulation of samples on the microscale

  • Experience with microscopy and image analysis for life sciences applications a plus.

  • Must be able to travel up to 75% of the time, including some weekends.
