Sr. Fermentation Scientist- Decatur, IL

This is an exempt level position

ADM Cell Engineering team is seeking a technical leader with deep experience in microbial physiology and fermentation process development. The successful candidate will be responsible for project design and execution, reporting of recommendations to senior leadership and coordinating implementation of process improvements with commercial facilities across a range of ADM products.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Leading projects on the development and improvement of fermentation processes, from benchtop-scale through to production scale;

  • Providing subject-matter expertise in microbial fermentation and physiology;

  • Developing kinetic, metabolic, and economic models for a variety of products;

  • Providing thought leadership and intellectual rigor across teams running fermentation experimentation from sub-1 L scale to 1000 L;

  • Overseeing technology transfers from Research to Operations or CMO's.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated an ability to successfully drive process development projects across a range of fermentation modes, microbial systems, and products through to implementation at commercial scale.


  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent in fermentation or biochemical engineering.

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in fermentation process development, demonstrating delivery of value to the business through execution of projects.

  • Subject matter expert in fermentation process development, across a range of industrially-relevant microorganisms and a variety of fermentation processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to link an understanding of the physiology of microbes and fermentation process improvements.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability, with evidence of innovative thinking.

  • Experience in project management and technology transfer.

  • Experience with direct supervision of scientists and technicians.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with both technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams to coordinate the transfer of bench scale knowledge through scale-up to provide value for the business.

Job Description: The Decatur Corn Processing plant is seeking a Project Engineer to assist with the management of capital projects to improve the operation of the plant. They will oversee the design and implementation of capital projects required for production. This includes identifying and evaluating project opportunities; requesting authorization for projects; as well as designing, installing, and commissioning approved projects. This person will have the opportunity to utilize engineering skills to improve operations processes including reliability, yields, and operability. Job Duties: * Ensure stewardship of viable capital projects from inception to commission. This involves effective management of personnel and resources to balance schedules, budgets, and scope/quality of a project. The Project Engineer will work closely with other project engineers, site project coordinators, contractors, process engineers, and operations personnel. They will provide oversight of construction personnel during the course of the project by working in the field on a daily basis. * Manage project budgets and resources. Written and verbal communication of project activities and key metrics shall be provided to managers and other stakeholders. They will size equipment, develop equipment lists, detail P&IDs and other front end engineering tasks. They will participate in process hazard analysis, contractor safety, and productivity improvements. They will assist in developing operating procedures and training production personnel on unit operations for start-up. * Maintain an awareness of industry trends and investigate the means by which projects can be improved, implemented, and managed.
