Position Summary

The Sr. Engineering Technician works independently to provide technical support and data analyses and makes recommendations based on the interpretation of data. Applies extensive discipline-specific knowledge and experience to engineering tasks and projects. Additional involvement in processes will include but is not limited to, budgeting, planning, acquisitions, and divestitures.

Essential Roles & Responsibilities

  • Extract and analyze data and reports from various internal systems including Aries, AVM, and third-party well data, including state regulatory and production data, and SM Energy Data Warehouses

  • Competent knowledge of Spotfire, Access, SQL, Aries, Alteryx, and Power Pivot

  • Support the operations execution scheduling process and assist engineers in changes for budget and reserves. Analyze data and present detailed reports as required

  • Coordinate data retrieval, loading, manipulation, and management for use by groups other than engineering teams/departments

  • Ability to check and ensure accuracy of data and reporting.

  • Communicate effectively with other teams in the organization to ensure data and reports are accurate and distributed timely.

  • Provide supporting data via research from public sources such as IHS and regulatory agencies

  • Assist engineers in the preparation of technical reports, analyses, evaluations, and presentations as needed (may require advanced spreadsheet applications and skills)

  • Perform moderate calculations and preliminary analyses of data in support of engineering studies

  • Conduct business safely and with the highest ethical standards

  • Other duties as assigned

Duties may vary for discipline-specific technicians and may include:

  • Planning: Create and maintain numerous reports and spreadsheets for operations planning group. Develop processes that are repeatable and that utilize and provide accurate data.

Computer/Software Applications

Competent level of skills with Microsoft Office. Competent knowledge of the following discipline-specific programs:

  • Planning: All Microsoft business applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Aries, Spotfire, AFE Navigator, Wellview, Alteryx, Access, Power Pivot

Role-Specific Technical Knowledge & Skills

Competent knowledge of the industry and operations. Competent use of advanced Excel formulas (VLOOKUP, MATCH, TRANSPOSE, PivotTable, PowerPivot, etc.). Competent in the following discipline-specific skills:

  • Planning: Data management including the ability to push and pull data between systems to be used for analysis, creatively addressing problems using Aries modeling.

Typical Education

Technical associate degree or related experience required Bachelor's Degree in relevant field preferred

Typical Experience

Minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field or industry
