We are looking for a talented Sr Engineer, Software Controls to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Components Business Segment in Rochester Hills, MI.
This product focused position tailors' electronic systems for Cummins products. People in these positions will configure (tune), integrate, test, and release software, electronic control units, tools, sensors, actuators, and harnesses into an electronic system that controls the operation of Cummins' products in a variety of customer applications.
Investigates electronic application and systems problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution, and documents results.
Applies and improves electronic application and systems development processes and tools. Processes include system specification, modelling and simulation, calibration, Design Verification Plan and Report (DVP&R), and troubleshooting. Tools include Simulink, calibration tools, and PTC Integrity.
Obtains input and negotiates with product and software development teams and delivers control system designs, verified and calibrated software features and builds to product teams.
Makes decisions in the areas of electronic systems design, requirements, calibration, and test that impact the quality and performance of calibrated subsystems and feature classes of electronic subsystems.
Responsible for review of less-experienced developers/testers' work to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design.
Provides independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems, or services with greater elements of ambiguity over the senior or lead engineer level and with full accountability to the project team.
Delivers independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge.
Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit site.
Coordinates and directs work amongst technicians and temporary student employees, assists in the transfer of knowledge to lesser experienced engineers through either indirect (scope of influence) or direct management of a small, local group of engineers.
Provides support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and continues to develop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.
Operates as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within the immediate team.

Education, Licenses, Certifications
College, university, or equivalent bachelor's degree in engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
Develop and design control systems for mechatronics, electro-pneumatic and electrical smart systems, considering the integration of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and pneumatic components.
Collaborate with cross-functional electronics, mechatronics, and mechanical engineering teams to specify system requirements and functionality.
Write custom control logic and algorithms to achieve precise control and performance optimization.
Utilize simulation tools to create mathematical models of product systems, allowing real-time simulations to test and validate control strategies, tuning parameters, and safety measures, refining algorithms as needed.
Ensure software and systems comply with safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262)
Perform risk assessments and implement safety protocols.
Conduct MIL (model in the loop), SIL (Software in the loop), HIL (hardware in the loop) testing, and assist on vehicle level validation of control systems to ensure they meet performance and quality standards.
Diagnose and resolve technical issues in electro-mechanical and electro-pneumatic systems.
Develop maintenance procedures and schedules to ensure system reliability.
Create detailed technical documentation, including system schematics, wiring diagrams, and user manuals.
Required Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in designing and programming control systems for mechatronics, electro-pneumatic, electro-hydraulic or electrical systems, motors, and linear actuators, with a strong foundation in writing custom control logic and algorithms.
Experience in use of simulation software (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink).
Experience programming using C, C++, and Python.
Knowledge of electronics and electro-pneumatic components, and product development processes.
Familiarity with safety standards and regulations relevant to the product industry.
Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Willingness to adapt to evolving technologies and learning opportunities.
Preferred Experience:
Electronic Braking Systems, Electric Steering Systems, Pneumatic controlled systems.
Model-based design/simulation of systems (MIL, SIL and HIL), using software tools such as Matlab/Simulink, PowerSim, TruckSim, etc.
Hands on experience with vehicle systems and components.
