We are seeking a Sr. Director of Global Operations for the M-Cubed division facilities in Connecticut, Delaware and Vietnam, where we develop and produce ceramic composite materials and products for various global industries. This role will partner with Coherent corporate, business unit functional partners and facility operations/manufacturing teams to drive the execution of the divisions' strategic operational goals and develop additional capacity across these locations.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure manpower, operating cost and capital investments plans are continuously worked to maximize individual, team, department and overall effectiveness, performance and achievement of annual budget.

  • In collaboration with the site leader, manages the Labor Bargaining process and Collective Bargaining Agreement, utilizing support services as required. Represent the company in collective bargaining agreement negotiations, grievances and arbitrations as required.

  • Ensure Quality standards are set and achieved. ISO9000 certificate is maintained through passing of semi-annual audits. All key processes are documented, audited, and implemented with an effective change control discipline. A strong culture driving continuous improvement is established and led.

  • Collaborate with the Sales leadership team to establish "Executive-Level Relationships" at all key accounts. Utilize these relationships to resolve any large issues, discuss relevant strategic plans, and maintain a positive interface for growing the accounts.

  • Ensure that R&D proposals that become contracts are in line with the Technology Roadmap and effectively managed and executed.

  • Support other Coherent divisions to establish key account strategies for common major accounts; Recommend integrated strategies and tactics to achieve leading market share positions.

  • Demonstrate exemplary leadership through commitment, energy and personal productivity; Set high standards and expectations for members of the team; Promote individual and team enthusiasm, motivation, commitment and productivity via open discussion, honest communication, factual representation and even-handed problem/issue/dispute/conflict resolution. Drive the leadership improvement initiative.

  • Create and maintain a technology strategy (a long-term view with elements of process, product interactions) is created and maintained; hardware and tools (interaction with process) and product quality by design.

  • Identify capital requirements and submit during 5-year and 1-year planning activities. CAR's are prepared, approved, and the associated projects completed on-schedule and within budget.

  • Manage manufacturing and purchasing support to ensure and inventory levels and control systems are appropriately established, utilized and maintained in the ERP system.

  • Presents at the QBR on a quarterly basis. Presentations are timely, concise, and strategic.

  • Seeks new opportunities that can lead to the acquisition of new products, capabilities, or business entities that can enhance and help grow the business.

  • Participates in discovery, due diligence, and M&A negotiation activity as appropriate

  • Education & Experience

  • B.S. in Engineering required (ceramic/materials engineering preferred)

  • MBA highly desirable.

  • 15+ years of experience in progressively more responsible engineering and/or operating management positions.

  • Experience required as a technical solutions manager; desirable to have technical experience in design, manufacturing and applications; process and device fabrication and the product realization process.

  • Experience managing a unionized workforce.

  • Proven track record of delivering high performance results in an emerging and growing business.

  • Proven ability to develop and implement long range growth strategies including market analysis, business plan development and evaluation of project potentials.

  • Strong financial skill set. Capable of managing a site through a keen understanding of financial planning, management and reporting.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and achieve results through others

  • Experience with problem analysis and resolution at the functional level with a proven track record of continuous improvement

  • Experienced with Total Quality\Business Excellence and business process management

  • Ability to excel in a cross-organizational, cross-cultural, global-team environment; able to organize, motivate and carry-out effective interactions at all levels.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with ability to comprehend technical concepts and communicate at a high level with customers and principals at different levels in the organization.

  • Knowledge of advanced-materials manufacturing and/or precision fabrication processes, component and systems engineering and manufacturing.

  • Skilled at visualizing, developing and implementing an aggressive approach to strategic/long-term business plans in support of company goals.

  • Ability to work effectively within a matrix organization, effectively utilizing corporate resources reporting on a dotted line basis.

  • Skilled at developing relationships and mentoring, with a proven ability to lead and motivate people.

  • Due to ITAR compliance, this position requires candidates to be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident Alien, or Protected Individual per 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)

Working Conditions

Ability to travel both domestic and international

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to occasionally lift/push/pull up to 10 lbs.

  • Able to sit, stand, bend, squat and walk about the facility

  • Able to sit minimum 8 hours per day
