Title: Senior Director, Human Resources

Location: Hybrid (Chicago, Illinois)

Shift: Monday to Friday (8:30am to 5:00pm)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops HR plans and strategies to support the achievement of the overall company objectives.

  • Provides strategic direction and leadership to the HR department, including but not limited to recruitment, labor relations, contract negotiations and administration, workforce planning, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and staff and leadership development.

  • Develops, implements, manages, and monitors human resources policies and procedures and recommends policies and policy changes to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Board of Directors.

  • Researches and analyzes industry trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law to communicate and apply changes in policies and practices.

  • Leads employment relations including the negotiation efforts related to Collective Bargaining Unit contracts.

  • Leads HR initiatives to promote equity, diversity and inclusion across the enterprise.

  • Promotes employee benefits, staff development, employee engagement, and recognition and retention strategies as a means of attracting qualified candidates to develop a workforce connected to mission, strategy and organizational effectiveness.

  • Supervises benefits administration and develops employee services in accord with applicable policies, procedures and government regulations

  • Directs plan audits, reporting and compliance activities.

  • Uses data for trends and continuous quality improvement.

  • Prepares budget, directs strategic planning and supervises department's leadership team.

  • Ensures organization complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements of ADA/EEO; advising management on needed actions.

  • Works with executive leadership to regularly monitor employee morale, turnover and position vacancies. Periodically conducts employee satisfaction surveys.

  • Assists in planning and directing Town Halls and other company-wide initiatives.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in conferences and educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

HR Business Partner, Payroll Manager, Benefits Manager, Sr. Benefits Administrator, Director of Talent Acquisition Services, Associate Director Learning & Development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institute of higher learning in human resources management, business administration, or related fields. Master's degree preferred.

  • Minimum ten (10) years of progressive Human Resources experience required.

  • Minimum seven (7) years of HR management at the Director level or above required.

  • Work experience in a nonprofit organization is a plus

Certifications/Licenses:

Human Resource Certification at SHRM PHR or SPHR level required. Lean or other process improvement certification, is a plus.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A):

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

  • Access to regular, dependable and timely transportation

  • Ability and comfortability working with people of varying socioeconomic backgrounds.

  • Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.

  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.

  • Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.

Work Arrangement:

This role is eligible for a "hybrid" or "remote" work arrangement. If hybrid, it is expected this person would be able to meet for "in person" meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.
