As a Senior Development Chemist, Lead for PPG, you'll have the opportunity to play an integral part in the innovation and development of our world class coatings used by customers worldwide. Our Development team is responsible for the development of new global product platforms for the powder coating markets, including formula design, preparation and application of coatings, as well as testing of these coatings against a wide range of regional specifications and customer requirements. As a Senior Development Chemist in the Powder Coatings Center of Excellence Lab you will be responsible for the following.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, conduct experimental work and analyze experimental results effectively to develop new powder coating platform technologies and products.

  • Work closely with R&D, regional labs and global product management to understand customer and market needs, mega trends, and competitive landscape. Use these understandings to propose new platform projects to support organic growth. Also provide continued support in defining, scoping and validating platform projects.

  • Lead technology platform teams, set milestones and deliver results against aggressive timelines. Coordinate related activities including synthesis, formulation, processing and application.

  • Maintain project information up to date in Compass and ensure timelines are realistic and adhered to.

  • Maintain and grow an understanding of powder coating processes, including details of key customer lines. Use the information to develop robust powder coating platforms, and increase the speed and success rate of product launches.

  • Develop new methods to simulate customer line conditions, accelerate the assessment of new powder coatings technologies.

  • Build and maintain a network with commercial and technical teams in all regions to communicate progress on projects and understand future needs. Drive technology transfer to accelerate localization and customization in all regions.

  • Maintain and communicate results through written and verbal summaries, coatings reports, and gate review updates.

  • Work safely, follow all lab procedures and contribute to the maintenance of high safety standards.

  • Train new associates in daily activities. May provide supervision for other associates.

  • A Ph.D with 3 or a M.S./B.S with 7 years of relevant industrial experience in a technical field such as Chemistry, Polymer/Material Science is required.

  • Prior formulation experience with powder coatings is required.

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team; ability to work and communicate effectively with peers and customers around the globe.

  • Demonstrated history of innovative thinking, generating and presenting new concepts.

  • Ability to manage complex technical projects with multiple stakeholders.

  • Prior experience with project management tools and stage gate process is a plus.

  • Familiar with experimental design (DOE), prior training with sigma logic (or DfSS) is a plus.

  • Demonstrates ability to influence and motivate other associates. Prior experience supervising other associates is a plus.

  • Ability to travel up to 10%.
