Role Definition

A Senior Designer must have a strong design background and a desire to use creativity to solve problems in three dimensional space, that enhances the productivity, quality, and working environment of facilities. They are responsible for project conceptual and production design phases, design integration across engineering disciplines, and coordination and communication of design intent to facilitate procurement and construction activities. A Senior Designer is very technical and understands industrial process flows, equipment, and design methodology required to develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFD's), and General Arrangement drawings. They are responsible for developing the technical scope of the projects, coordination of (internal and external) design/engineering resources, as well as development of design schedules and budgets. The Senior Designer must be proficient at considering all variables involved in project design including: spatial requirements, process sizing and limitations, special process equipment, building code and use, and structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil design considerations. As a partner to the Project Manager, Senior Designers serve as a valuable resource in planning overall project safety, budget, schedule, and quality of complex projects. PROTECT PEOPLE

  • Consider the safety of Keen Project Solutions construction personnel, the customer, operators, subcontractors, and the general public in project design, per, OSHA, MSHA, IBC, IFC, NFPA, or other applicable regulatory requirements for all scopes of work.

  • Research and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, municipal codes, permits, and standards relying upon proper expertise and resources internally and externally.

  • Perform job site observations and report deficiencies, non-conformance, safety issues, quality control issues, and opportunities for improvement to the senior-most project manager on an assigned project.

  • Comply with risk management programs applicable to assigned projects, including contracts, insurance, bonding, and any special owner or regulatory requirements. Identify areas of risk, investigate, and propose solutions.

BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

  • Coordinate design efforts of all parties involved in the project, including Owners, outside engineers, architects, consultants, contractors, trade contractors, and Project Management staff.

  • Demonstrate ability to communicate, and effectively establish, lead, and contribute to internal and external engineering and design teams.

  • Lead Owner Design Coordination Meetings. Facilitate open communication and collaboration with owners, designers, and trade partners to build a team atmosphere, resolve conflicts early, and drive progress. Ensure design activity and changes are documented and managed. Utilize online collaboration tools and web meetings to coordinate/communicate and conduct business efficiently.

  • Build engineering teams to effectively design projects, resolve design issues, answer questions, solve production problems, and make sure that final plans are accurate. Provide basic support for all other departments as needed, along with other assigned duties.

FOCUS ON END GOALS

  • Properly prepare and execute design services to meet customers' expectations for clarity, timeliness, quality, completeness, and efficiency.

  • Communicate effectively to ensure all team members and customers are well informed throughout the design process, including effective face-to-face meetings, web and phone conferences, design meetings and events, and other common communication channels.

  • Maintain a Critical Path Schedule, including establishing and reaching owner milestones. Organize architectural, design, and engineering resources, and technical hand-offs required for procurement, fabrication, and construction activities.

  • Estimate time and cost of engineering work. Optimize project resource utilization while ensuring procurement at the most cost-effective terms according to contract documents and defined budgets. Assist in developing cost estimates at varying stages of the project.

  • Work with Project Management staff to buy out engineering services. Prepare design/engineering contracts, negotiate revisions, changes, and additions to contractual agreements with architects, consultants, clients, suppliers, and trade contractors in a timely fashion according to agreed payment terms.

  • Work with the project team and vendors, to check equipment drawings, route submittals, organize and manage technical specifications, to ensure proper fit up and size of equipment.

  • Analyze equipment, systems, and processes to ensure process performance requirements are met, sustained, and improved; where appropriate.

  • Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to: scope development, site discovery, specification and technical writing, conceptual design, design/engineering management, estimating, and construction, or commissioning support.

DRIVE INNOVATION

  • Participate in on-going business development and continued customer service through professional representation of Keen Project Solutions within the industry and through customer, design partner, supplier, and industry contact interactions.

  • Work closely with internal and external project partners, engineers, and other professionals to develop project technical parameters and scope.

  • Strategically work with our project partners to pre-plan, identify, and eliminate constraints, and manage design risks throughout the project.

  • Integrate new technology or environmentally friendly practices into existing processes.

  • Implement process designs, create prototypes, test, make necessary modifications required to be cost-effective, keep with a given budget, and commission the process.

  • Critique designs for safety, manufacturability, constructability, potential failures, customer usage, functionality, and efficiency.

  • Analyze problems through data analysis, field engineering, experimentation, and dialog with the cross-functional team, to create more robust designs, reduce callbacks for warranty service, and drive continuous improvement.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 or 4-year degree from college or technical school in structural, architectural, electrical, or mechanical drafting or design. Combined experience and industry educational certifications to demonstrate competency will be considered.

  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience.

  • Ability to work in a cross functional team environment, and communicate clearly is required.

  • Strong design aptitude, experience, and ability is required.

  • Experience equipment commissioning and startup, beneficial.

  • Working knowledge of basic computer programs like Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and on-line collaboration tools. Proficient in Autodesk/Plant Design Suite products like Revit and AutoCAD is desired, with knowledge of Inventor, Navisworks, etc., beneficial.

  • Travel up to 20% or as needed, by air and ground.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly

  • Continuously requires vision, hearing, twisting, and talking.

  • Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, sitting, and handling; typical of office work.

  • Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, stairs, and work in confined spaces and in proximity to loud equipment.

  • Must be able to position one-self to work in confined spaces such as trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels.

  • Must be able to respond quickly to sounds.

  • Must be able to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.

  • Must be able to see and respond to dangerous situations.

  • Must be able to wear personal protective gear most of the day.

  • Must be able to work in cold/hot environments and on concrete floors.

  • Occasionally requires walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, bending, and crouching.

  • Continuously requires vision, hearing, twisting, and talking.

  • Must be able to traverse irregular and steep terrain.

  • Must be able to stand for extended durations.
