POSITION SUMMARY

The Decision Support department is the primary finance contact AND support for both department heads and the senior management team. As such, it is paramount that any work product is competent, accurate, relevant and reliable for the Decision Support department's customers. Data must absolutely be accurate and viable.

The Sr DS analyst, with minimal or no supervision, and using his/her judgment, may expect to prepare, maintain and audit data/databases necessary to perform analyses on all aspects of financial operations of the hospital. Included functional areas are as follows: operations/capital budgeting, productivity reporting, monthly financial reporting for department heads, cost accounting, productivity analyses and clinical/quality reporting/analyses.

The Sr DS analyst should also expect to liaison with multiple department heads in order to perform the various duties as assigned, but more importantly, to be a resource for clinicians in regards to the analyses of the financial operations of the hospital and their respective department(s).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sr DS analyst will:

  • Collect, audit and curate data from a variety of sources for purposes of analyzing and determining budgets, productivity and costing system(s)

  • Prepare downloads/uploads of data files as necessary to maintain various databases and then analyze data for various financial purposes

  • Use/develop sophisticated models to analyze financial and clinical data, spot trends and develop forecasts

  • Prepare standard or routine reports, analyze and make recommendations to department managers to improve financial operating results, and/or improve quality of outcomes or patient safety

  • Use judgment and critical thinking skills to develop and prepare ad-hoc reports to uncover/investigate inefficiencies, compliance, quality and patient safety issues

  • Develop (and routinely update) standards (RVUs) and establish other protocols to be used in budgeting, productivity and cost allocation

  • Continually audit data and analyses and mine for opportunities to improve data or processes

  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned by his/her manager

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

  • Bachelors in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related healthcare field with appropriate financial experience

B. Qualifications/Experience


Financial and Analytical

Skills:
  • General ledger accounting, budgeting, financial analysis (including ROI, pro-forma analysis), cost accounting in a healthcare setting (preferably hospital), productivity and productivity standards

  • RVU development and indirect allocation development

  • Data warehousing and related database structure/functionality, including basic understanding of interface design

  • Understanding of hospital revenue cycle including reimbursement or expected payment calculations

Confidentiality and Ethics Standards:

  • Understanding HIPAA compliance particularly with regards to patient confidentiality / PHI

  • Basic understanding of CMS CoPs

  • Basic understanding of compliance issues in hospital setting

Software Skills:

  • Microsoft Office including intermediate to advanced Excel skills

  • Budgeting (i.e. EPSi, Axiom, Strata, etc.)

  • Productivity (i.e. Visionware, Kronos, etc.)

  • General Ledger (preferably Lawson)

  • Decision Support (i.e. Trendstar, HPM, EPSi, Eclipsys, etc.)

Work Experience:

  • 3 or more years in a similar setting and similar responsibilities preferred

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Experience in healthcare (preferably an acute care hospital) is required Experience with updating, maintaining and auditing databases is required Experience auditing data, interfaces is required

  • Analytical experience required
