DESCRIPTION

Under supervision of the Custodial Supervisor 1, use manual and powered floor care equipment to clean and maintain hard, resilient, carpeted and specialty floors throughout UC San Diego Recreation facilities including, but not limited to: floors in hallways, lobbies, mechanical spaces, fitness spaces, restrooms, locker rooms, offices, conference rooms, auditoriums, gymnasiums, lounges, common areas, and stairways. Prepare, operate, maintain and clean manual and powered floor care equipment including but not limited to: low and high speed buffers, scrubbers, strippers, polishers, burnishers, carpet extractors and bonnets, blowers, ride on equipment, wet/dry vacuums, automated floor scrubbers and vacuums among others.

Follow established safety procedures and operate floor care equipment in accordance with established guidelines. Report equipment malfunctions and maintenance problems to supervisor. Safely move furniture to prepare floors for cleaning. Remove all debris, dust, dirt and objects on floors by dust mopping, sweeping, damp mopping, wet mopping, and or vacuuming before beginning floor care procedures. Properly protect surrounding non-floor surfaces including baseboards, walls, doors and frames before and during floor care processes. Strip, seal, wax, refinish, scrub, burnish, polish, buff and spray buff hard and resilient floors using proper chemical mixtures, floor care equipment and personal protective equipment. Dust mop, sweep, damp mop, and/or wet mop during and after floor care procedures as required. Clean and shampoo carpeted floors using carpet and steam extractors and/or bonnets. Use vacuums and wet/dry vacuums to clean floors after carpet cleaning procedures as required. Replace vacuum bags and/or filters as needed. Load, unload and transport floor care equipment to various campus buildings by cart or motorized vehicle.

Clean stairs, stairwells, hallways, corridors, walls, moldings, boards, outside steps, terraces, roof decks, windows. window sills, glass and other designated areas. Clean doors, partition glass, showers, glass panels, and inside and outside windows at ground level. Polish metal and stainless steel fixtures and handrails. Clean and disinfect restrooms, showers, and locker rooms to include: toilets, urinals, partitions, fixtures, sinks, counters and mirrors. Replenish soap and paper goods. Empty wastebaskets and other receptacles and clean as needed. Dust, clean and/or wax cabinets, desks, furnishings, conference tables, wall wood paneling and other woodwork. Clean and disinfect arena areas including retractable bleachers, backboards and curtains according to established standards. Dust horizontal surfaces, empty trash and soiled linen, polish metal surfaces and clean office areas. Secure facilities during assigned shift. Lock doors and windows for building security and lock unoccupied areas/offices after cleaning.

Establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships in a diverse environment including members of the department and campus community. Practice and model the fundamentals of UC San Diego's Principles of Community. Effectively work with campus customers and custodial team members to accomplish work with a high level of quality and efficiency. Operate personal computer and department issued phone to access pertinent information about work assignments, special projects, customer communication, supervisor communication, timekeeping/time tracking, employment benefits, policies and procedures, etc. using the internet, email system, Recreation work order system, and timekeeping system. Provide expeditious, professional and courteous customer service.

Maintain functional awareness of the typical hazards of the work place and the special hazards that may be encountered at UC San Diego such as biohazards, radiation, chemicals, etc. Consistently follow established safety procedures for dealing with potential hazards. Follow established procedures and guidelines to safely work with chemicals, solutions, and heavy equipment. Report safety concerns to supervisor. Maintain a safe work area including the use of caution signs and barriers when appropriate. Wear and properly use all personal protective equipment (PPE) furnished by the University. Maintain an acceptable attendance and punctuality record and meet deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least one year of experience performing floor care and cleaning in a commercial custodial cleaning operation or large multi-facility environment.

  • Demonstrated experience in operating, storing and maintaining the following equipment including but not limited to: vacuum cleaner, floor scrubber, buffers, high pressure washer, carpet cleaning machines (shampoo, extract, pile lift), wet/dry vacuums, extractors, floor scrubbing and/or polishing machines, scissor lift and electrostatic sprayers.

  • Experience with disinfection, sanitation and cleaning methods required of public restrooms and Recreation spaces

  • Experience implementing proper and safe chemical use and mixture. Knowledge of and experience using and testing environmentally safe and sustainable cleaning methods and green products. Ability to provide input and make suggestions to improve work methods and products.

  • Basic computer skills to check email, enter time and material data and to complete electronic records.

  • Experience following established safety procedures and policies and knowledge of and experience using appropriate safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Experience in securing a building, including responsibility of keys; familiarity with use of commercial door locks, panic hardware, and hold-open devices.

  • Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English. Writing skills must be sufficient to fill out checklists and log books, to complete forms, and to communicate effectively with others as necessary.

  • Must be flexible and able to effectively adjust to changing operational priorities requiring assignment of special projects and/or different area assignments as necessary. Ability to work independently and with diverse teams of people.

  • Customer service experience; work history demonstrates experience providing customer service and customer communication in a cleaning, housekeeping and/or general building maintenance environment.

  • Ability to safely operate stake bed and lift trucks and/or motorized carts.

  • Must be physically able to consistently perform job duties.

  • Demonstrated experience in floor care, including wood (gymnasium and dance floors), tile, concrete surfaces and carpet care.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • A "Cleared" Background check and DMV check required.

  • Must possess and maintain valid California Driver license.

  • Ability to safely operate stake bed and lift trucks and/or motorized carts.

  • Must be able to safely lift, carry, move, push and pull a minimum load of 50 lbs.

  • Must be available to work occasional overtime with little or no advance notice.

  • Must be able to work onsite. Must be able to work in all areas of Campus.

  • Must be able to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English.

  • This position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in University of California

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $40,653 - $50,550 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $19.47 - $24.21

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
