The Senior Counsel is a legal counsel for the Mars Petcare business. The incumbent will be an effective business partner to the global Mars Petcare business and is accountable to provide legal support for decisions to grow business, manage legal risks and protect the brands and reputation while ensuring compliance with company policies and laws. The Senior Counsel will need to quickly establish strong working relationships with senior leaders and be able to navigate the complex legal issues created by working in this entrepreneurial and fast-paced global business. This role will report to, and work closely with, the AGC supporting Mars Petcare.

What are we looking for?

  • J.D. from an accredited law school with 7+ years of general corporate legal experience required, ideally with experience in both a well-respected law firm and in the legal department of an international company. Preference for experience in the CPG sector and with or supporting a private company.

  • Broad-based legal experience supporting a consumer business, including drafting and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements. Capable of analyzing complex legal and policy issues from a commercial perspective.

  • Strong knowledge of Intellectual Property Law

  • Expertise in Antitrust, Data Privacy, Food/Regulatory, and/or Marketing/Advertising Law is a plus.

  • Experience sitting on business leadership teams and/or providing counsel to senior business leaders is a plus.

  • Strong business acumen with ability to act decisively.

  • Good relationship and influencing skills.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Must be a self-starter, highly motivated with a bias for action (strong work ethic) and able to function independently.

  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Strong, flexible team player and collaborator that works to meet both personal and organization goals.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent organization, execution and project management skills.

  • Ability to travel.

What would be your key responsibilities?

  • Work with other members of the Mars legal team to develop and implement legal strategies for the business, which will unlock the growth of the business and effectively manage legal risks.

  • Understand the Mars Petcares business strategies and objectives, and consistently make commercial legal decisions that support achievement of the business objectives while mitigating commercial, reputational and legal risk.

  • Demonstrate creativity, agile thinking and an entrepreneurial mindset.

  • Support efforts in relation to legal and regulatory compliance and the Five Principles.

  • Maintain a global mindset and cross-continent awareness to support Petcares operations in as consistent a manner as possible across regions.

  • Understand and apply data privacy guidelines consistent with regulatory and Mars requirements.

  • Partner with business functional leads and develop working relationships to enhance decisions and choices taken by the business.

  • Understand and embrace the Mars Petcare ecosystem.

  • Enhance governance and intra-company alignment to ensure moving with speed is not done by sacrificing Mars Principles or stakeholder engagement.
