The Senior Corporate Counsel Labor & Employment will work closely with internal business partners and leaders at the University of Phoenix to provide legal review and advice regarding labor and employment matters. This position will be responsible for providing practical advice and counseling in a wide variety of areas including discrimination, disability accommodation, job protected leaves, hiring, performance management and discharge, wage and hour, internal investigations, employee privacy, restrictive covenants, severance plans, employment agreements, and other relevant employment law situations.
The Senior Corporate Counsel Labor & Employment will also assist with the assessment, selection, and supervision of outside counsel for labor and employment advice matters.
The Senior Corporate Counsel Labor & Employment may also have the opportunity to assist from time-to-time with matters related to health and welfare benefits, the University's 401(k) Plan, and employment disputes, including government agency and administrative charges, employee demand letters and employment related litigation.
Provides legal services as a practicing counsel, which includes interpreting federal and state laws, rules and regulations, as well as advises University personnel on legal rights, obligations, and privileges. This position is also accountable for participating and/or leading in such legal or legally related activities as executive management deems appropriate
Assists in managing outside legal services as appropriate to meet University and Legal department goals
Maintains a professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies. Represents the organization as appropriate in its relationship with the legal and business communities by participating in targeted events, conferences and workshops
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school required
A member in good standing of a Bar of one of the fifty states or the District of Columbia
Minimum 8 years' experience in a law firm or in-house position with a focus on labor and employment law. Experience in the field of higher education is not required, but will be helpful
Familiarity with California employment law and experience or interest in working with health and welfare and 401(k) plans are plusses, but not required
Proven ability to demonstrate a high level of analytical and strategic thinking to provide legal counsel and guidance to the organization, as described above
Ability to convey a professional image and effectively represent the organization as appropriate in its relationship with the legal, education, business, and government communities
Ability to communicate complex and technical information to persons with non-legal related backgrounds
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to communicate organizational policies and procedures, as well as federal and state laws and regulations to University personnel, as described above
Must be results-oriented and able to manage several projects simultaneously
Must have a working knowledge of personal software packages to prepare correspondence, spreadsheets, and reports
