The Sr. Community Engagement Specialist will partner with the Community Engagement Manager to plan, execute, and attend stakeholder engagement activities in communities throughout South Carolina and neighboring states where we currently operate surface mining operations or are seeking a newly permitted location. The Sr. Community Engagement Specialist will develop and maintain relationships with organizations, government agencies, and community leaders, and will seek out opportunities to positively impact these communities through partnerships, sponsorships, and volunteer engagement.

  • Must have a working knowledge of and/or involvement in South Carolina's agricultural, industrial, government, nonprofit and/or environmental communities.

  • Must possess strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Must be a self-starter and creative thinker who can generate new and meaningful ways to engage the public.

  • Must be a team player and community organizer who thrives on making meaningful connections with people of all backgrounds.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience, preferably in Marketing, Communications, Public Service, Environmental, Civil Engineering, Urban Studies, Construction Aggregates, Real Estate, or related field.

  • 7 -10 years of experience in civil service, marketing, communications and/or public relations in South Carolina.

  • Experience successfully cultivating and maintaining relationships with diverse communities.

  • Demonstrated commitment to civic engagement and collaboration.

  • Experience working with the media and community stakeholders.

  • Understanding of and passion for environmental and civic priorities.

  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and multi-task.

  • Strong organizational, time management and project prioritization skills with the ability to handle a multitude of projects and changing priorities.

  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office programs: Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

  • Ability to attend stakeholder events nights and weekends, and travel when required.

  • Working knowledge of nonprofit or philanthropic sector a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with diverse community stakeholders through facilitated discussions a plus.

Position Responsibilities:

  • 35% of job: Partner with Community Engagement Manager in planning and implementing community engagement activities that support company-wide permitting efforts, primarily in South Carolina but also, occasionally, in neighboring states. Be immersive in topics involving local environmental, social or municipal planning in order to contribute meaningful insight into planning and programs.
  • 50% of job: Serve as the daily interface for partnerships, sponsorships, and volunteer activities with civic groups, local government agencies, businesses, schools, and other community organizations throughout Mid- and Western South Carolina. Be present at local events and identify new opportunities to increase brand awareness, display our mission and values, and support the development of trusting relationships.
  • 15% of job: Support internal teams by collecting and maintaining a database of community leaders, stakeholders, and influencers. Work with internal teams to develop messaging for various communication channels, including company website, influencer management, eNewsletters and social media. May be called on to handle media inquiries and support media outreach.
  • 10% of the job: Successfully manage budgets, timelines, stakeholder communications, and meeting commitments. Other duties as assigned.

Travel:

Day travel (requiring drive time of up to four hours each way: 40%. Overnight travel: 10%. In-office: 10%. Work from home office: 40%.

Occasional Work Conditions:

On occasion, while performing the duties of this job, the associate will be visiting locations where off-road conditions, construction and/or surface mining will be taking place. During these visits, the associate may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, loud noises, fumes, airborne particles, and other outside weather conditions.
