Mechanical coordinates and oversees the repair, inspection, cleaning, rebuilding, replacing and maintenance of 1,180 pieces of rolling stock used in commuter service. The department's goal is to provide safe, clean and reliable service while maintaining the fleet to the standards of the Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, American Public Transit Association and the original equipment manufacturers.
Reporting to the Director, PSA Operations Compliance, the Senior Car Inspector will examine rolling stock and equipment, inspection documents and federal forms, maintenance logs, and event recorder downloads to determine the condition of equipment, and compliance with federal regulations, maintenance schedules, and quality standards. The position will also identify and resolve technical problems and the cause of failures; document findings including needed repairs; and conduct re-inspections to ensure defects identified in the initial inspection were corrected. Inspect locomotives, Highliners, and coach cars in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, Association of American Railroads (AAR) rules, American Public Transportation Association (APTA) safety standards, and Metra maintenance practices to confirm compliance with requirements; identify current or potential equipment problems; document findings; and prepare inspection reports. Audit inspection paperwork, federal forms and documents, and event recorder systems to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, rules, and standards; and to identify the cause of equipment failures. Enter inspection data into the asset management database and generate activity and trend reports. Participate in special inspection campaigns and operational testing. Promote safe work practices and maintain and foster a safe work environment. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering OR be a qualified mechanic/electrical journeyman OR have a combination of education and experience that equals four years of technical experience.
In addition to #1, must have a minimum of four (4) years of technical field experience working in a railroad, transportation, or manufacturing industry.
Experience working with Maximo or similar asset management software is preferred.
Good knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment and techniques used in repairing and maintaining rolling stock equipment.
Good knowledge of railroad mechanical operations as well as safety rules and procedures.
Good knowledge of DoT and FRA regulations.
Good analytical and problem solving skills.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Skill reading builders schematics and diagrams and troubleshooting problems.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to adjust to shifting priorities and timelines promptly and efficiently.
Ability to work within databases to log information and access and create reports.
Ability to work cooperatively with individuals within the organization.
Must possess or obtain 49 CFR, Part 238 certification as a Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) within 90 days of hire.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.
Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
