Atkore International is currently seeking a Product Designer for its Communications Integrators, Inc. (Cii) facility located in Tempe Arizona. Cii is a leader in the design and manufacturing of modular power, voice and data solutions. The position is focused on designing world-class buildings and forming strong relationships with clients. The candidate will collaborate positively and professionally in a team environment and deliver a project design from conception to completion that brings the client's ideas to fruition. Qualified candidates must be self-motivated, team players, interested in personal & professional growth and continuous learning. The ideal candidate must have excellent design and production skills. This role offers the right individual the opportunity to be a key contributor to the transformation efforts taking place on our rapidly improving facility.

Key Accountabilities

  • Prepare complete estimates for assigned project(s) of all complexities.

  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.

  • Prepare discipline estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work.

  • Maintain files of working documents as backup for estimate figures, including current and accurate information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures and price lists, etc.

  • Review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials.

  • Review and incorporate historical data from purchase orders, subcontracts, productivity analysis reports, etc. into unit and manhour figures.

  • Review proposal specifications, drawings and attend prebid meetings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.

  • Coordinate total estimating effort relevant to particular bid/project as assigned.

  • Follow awarded contracts as assigned may include procuring material, etc.

  • Support other department personnel as required; may include preparing estimates in other disciplines.

  • Perform additional assignments as directed.


Job requirements include:

  • 3 5 years' related experience

  • Electrical Journeyman's or Masters License preferred

  • Associates Degree required, Bachelor's Degree Preferred

  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD Revit Architecture is beneficial

  • Demonstrated capability in all aspects of design and construction administration including but not limited to shop drawing/submittal review and coordination, periodic monitoring of construction sites, interfacing with contractors and clients

  • Strong technical proficiency and creative skills

  • Able to meet challenging deadlines while producing a quality product

  • Field experience creating medium and large projects

  • Proficiency with Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe, Bluebeam)

  • Knowledge of estimating techniques and cost control

  • Strong desire to represent the best interests of the company at all times

  • Strong inter-office communication skills and professional demeanor

The Designer I (DS I) possesses the skills to design using current AutoCAD Electrical technology and is expected to work within the design criteria established by the Design Manager, Senior Industrial Designer or Senior Controls System Integrator. The Designer I (DS I) is a controls system design associate capable of following design instructions from the Design Manager and/or Senior Industrial Designer. The Designer I (DS I) is expected to help with the execution of project tasks to consistently achieve technical project experience and success. The Designer I (DS I) is expected to learn the skills required to successfully execute their responsibilities. The Designer I (DS I) should obtain and maintain a current technical skill-set through memberships in technical and industry-based organizations, reading trade publications, attending seminars, formal classroom training, or any other means necessary. Tangible demonstration of professional development is a requirement at annual reviews. The role of the Designer I (DS I) is to be able to assist in the completion tasks within a project with the direction of a Designer III (DSIII) or higher. Essential Job Functions The Designer is responsible for the following: * Follow design instructions of control systems through the Design Manager, Senior Industrial Designer, Senior Control Systems Integrator and reviewing engineering documents supplied to the Designer I (DS I). These documents might include the following from the Project Manager and/or Senior Control Systems Integrator: * Project technical specifications. * Detailed Bill of Materials (BOM) of components required for design development. * Typical circuit diagrams accompanied by hand sketches, component datasheets, and/or spreadsheets detailing instances. * I/O list(s) of the required PLC family to be incorporated into the completed design. * Motor manifests (if required by current control system design) * Any number of other documents required to provide clear understanding of the necessary design information. * Follow instructions to modify detailed industrial control panel drawings including: (Assisted by a Designer III (DS III) or higher)Power Distribution & Control Circuits * 480V AC Power Distribution. * 120V AC Power Distribution & 120V AC UPS Power Distribution. * 24V DC Power Distribution. * 120V AC & 24V AC/DC Control Circuits. * Discrete PLC input and output drawings / Analog PLC input and output drawings. * Control Panel Layout * Physical interior and exterior panel layout drawings. * Detailed component listing Bill of Materials (BOM). * Network Communication Diagrams. * Radio communication layout drawings. * Server rack design & layout drawings. * Ethernet communication diagrams & details. * PLC & I/O Card Rack layout drawings. * Field interconnect drawings. * Field loop drawings. * Field device location drawings. * Interposing wiring connection diagrams. * Point-to-point connection diagrams. * Other drawings as necessary to provide a complete design package. * Work closely with the Design Manager, Senior Industrial Designer, Designer III (DS III), Project Managers, Shop Manager, and project Senior Control Systems Integrator to make sure that the design is precise and accurate. * Work with design team members to successfully modify the design of detailed industrial control panel drawings. * Ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently within the instructions of a Designer III (DS III) or higher. * Adjust current drawings with direction by the Design Manager, Senior Industrial Designer, Controls System Integrator, or Project Manager. * Ability to work in a dynamic environment and adapt to frequent project changes. * Ability to follow instructions and diagrams with assistance from Designer III (DS III) or higher to modify drawings using company drafting and design standards. * Follow project schedules and meet project due dates.
