Sr. Application Scientist - Gas Chromatography

Uses knowledge of Gas Chromatography and the scientific method to design, develop, and execute studies to support applications development and method publication in BU's key strategic segments. Provides technical requirements to the GC product development team and is involved in the evaluation of GC technologies. The position holder will also have responsibility for representing PerkinElmer at key conferences and trade shows. In addition, liaising, developing, and maintaining relationships with key GC collaborators.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Executes established research plan, records data produced, and identifies issues and opportunities observed during research process. Has a good understanding of the challenges and approaches to GC optimum measurements.

  • Reviews and discuss technical briefs, provide analytical detection or sample preparation insights and resource estimates for new application work.

  • Generates applications and works with customers/collaborators to develop solutions.

  • Able to troubleshoot/diagnose problems with specific GC applications

  • Evaluates fitness for purpose of new products for key target applications

  • Interacts with project team members and peers to anticipate and resolve day to day issues. Interact with other divisions, customers and suppliers on routine matters to achieve results.

  • Interacts, coaches and answers queries, when required, from the field or customers.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD with experience related to the development and validation of methods using Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry.


  • Masters Degree and 3+ years of experience with GC in an academic, government or commercial research environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in the development of GC platforms, sample introduction techniques with demonstrable intimacy with specifying products to meet customer's requirements and evaluating prototypes and developed products against key requirements.

  • Experience working within Federal agency requirements e.g. EPA or FDA.

  • Ability to succeed in a global fast-paced environment, working on multiple projects with constantly changing priorities and deadlines.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent team orientation within a multi-disciplinary environment.

  • Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering principles.

  • Previous experience with software development a plus.
