The Antibody Technology Sr. Specialist is responsible for supporting and collaboratively enhancing the antibody development needs of researchers at Fred Hutch. The Antibody Technology Sr. Specialist -Antibody Discovery and Production position will increase the antibody technology core's expertise in large scale protein production, and large-scale protein purification. This role must also have a willingness to learn all parts of the antibody discovery process and participate in the active development of new services and research opportunities.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY/ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Research Support: This varied role primary focus will be antibody production, antibody purification and size exclusion chromatography but are also likely to include generation of immunogens and screening reagents, including the recombinant protein and stable cell lines needed to discover antibodies. It will also include hybridoma generation, screening, and general hybridoma handling. It will include use of robotics and potentially some molecular biology.

  • Research development: This position is expected to provide a high level of support for users of the antibody technology core by establishing and maintaining a positive and collaborative working relationships with faculty and external users. The candidate will develop advanced protocols or creative solutions for and deliver high quality products from the antibody discovery process. This person is expected to lead in the development of tools for antibody production and purification in the core.

  • Equipment Oversight: This position is expected to be, or through training, become an expert on equipment in the antibody core such as Molecular Devices ClonePixII colony picker, IntelliCyt iQue Screener flow cytometer, AKTA Pure, Carterra SPR instrument and robotics automation used in the antibody discovery process. This role also serves as a resource for optimization of lab performance and efficiency. This candidate is expected to perform advanced equipment operation and maintenance or coordinate and complete maintenance on all equipment and software. This role participates in the review and identification of new equipment needs.

  • Training and Education: The candidate will lead initiatives to develop new training materials, SOPs, and guidelines for optimizing investigator interactions with the antibody core. This person will be expected to present on new or expanded technologies within the antibody core. The role will also mentor junior staff within the Shared Resource.

  • Administrative tasks: Tasks include completing batch records, updating liquid nitrogen logs and maintaining sample records. It will include communicating with the researchers who use the core as well as fostering positive relationships with vendors and service engineers who support the antibody core. Assistance with billing for service as required. As appropriate role will assist with Institutional Animal Care and use Committee protocol preparation.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Protien scienced related Master's Degree and 10+ years of experience with large scale protein production and purification.
  • OR-
  • Protein science related Bachelor's Degree and 15+ years of experience with large scale protein production and purification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new systems and techniques.

  • A background in Large scale HPLC including, protein A and G, size exclusion chromatography and ion exchange chromatography including column packing.

  • Capability in performing antibody production at large scale in multiple formats with hybridoma, transient recombinant and stable recombinant being examples.

  • Capability in performing antibody sequencing.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative team-oriented, core-lab environment.

  • Experience with MS Office suite of applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Sharepoint, Teams, One Drive, etc;)

  • Record keeping and database management.

  • Capable of undertaking work with minimal supervision and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Can perform detailed research and review of technology through literature searches, outreach to experts in field and other informational sources.

  • Basic rodent handling and procedural skills including animal immunization and familiarity with IACUC protocol management.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $94,702 to $149,656 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well-being, and financial security.
