We are looking for a Senior Accountant to join our nimble and hands-on accounting team. In this newly created role you'll have fantastic developmental opportunities while reporting to the Assistant Controller. This is not an over-the-shoulder role as you'll be working independently and asked to provide insights into overall business operations and performance. Well qualified candidates will have a degree in accounting, demonstrated proficiency across multiple accounting functions while looking to expand their skill set You'll have an advantage, although not required if you have a background in cost accounting within the bio-tech industry.

You'll be accountable for the following:

Job Functions

  • Verify, code and reconcile accounts payable working with internal staff to facilitate accuracy and process efficiency.

  • Review vendor statements at month end

  • Complete customer management processes to include assisting with credit limit determination, setup in SAP, and reviewing and following up on past due accounts recommending action as appropriate

  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations.

  • Provide on-going evaluation of process to identify inefficiencies, errors, and provide insight and ideas on how to process efficiency and reduce costs.

  • Perform month, quarter and year end close tasks including preparing and booking journal entries, maintaining account reconciliation schedules, and assisting finance in actual vs budget analysis.

  • Recommend opportunities to improve reporting system/processes to ensure timelier and accurate results.

  • Continuously looks for ways to automate manual processes.

  • Maintain fixed asset register and depreciation schedules.

  • Perform general accounting duties including sales invoices, credit memos, and bank reconciliations.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • BS in Accounting or equivalent.

  • Three years of relevant experience with demonstrated proficiency and increasing levels of responsibility.

  • Experience with ERP solutions ideally SAP

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Excel to include v-lookups and pivot tables.

  • Considerable and demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with the following:

  • General ledger functions

  • Month-end and year-end close processes

  • Balance sheet and bank reconciliations.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment without compromising attention to detail or accuracy.

  • Versatile, flexible, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities.

  • Ability to focus on detail, accuracy, and deadlines.

The Cash Management function is a centralized, campus organization within the Accounting Services unit in the Division of Business Services and is responsible for accounting for cash, check, ACH, wire, and centrally received revenue receipts. Under the general supervision of the Cash Management Supervisor, this position is responsible for establishing and maintaining campus wide policies and procedures as they relate to the security of customer credit card information, along with the collection of revenues and deposits, and other duties of the cash management unit, including, but not necessarily limited to, interest account, cash balance analysis, reconciliation activities, researching and resolving financial cash handling and posting matters and continuous improvement opportunities associated with cash management practices. This position requires familiarity with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) and cash accounting experience. This position also requires knowledge and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), broad variety of University funding sources, Federal regulations, State of Wisconsin, UW System, and UW Madison campus rules, regulations and guidelines. Accuracy and integrity of data is imperative to this position. Revenue processed through the Cash Management section exceeds $2 billion per fiscal year. The revenue may come in the form of cash, check, credit or debit card, ACH, wire transfer, or other forms of payment.
