Job Summary: The overall purpose of a Sports information manager/bus driver is to document and publicize the accomplishments of athletes and teams for the school. The Sports Information Manager/bus driver also aims to safely deliver students to and from events, including athletic and student club functions or field trips.

Essential Functions:

15% Develop and monitor social media sites to deliver the proper message to fans, recruits, supporters of the program and media. Manages the sport-specific accounts or works with program staff to develop a plan together for coverage.

15% The sports information manager will be responsible for maintaining the content of the website to include - articles, pictures, stats, etc. on the website. SIM will also establish streaming of sports per NJCAA/Region 7 policy.

15% Works game day, as assigned, to coordinate all media outlets, press row personnel, and appropriate exposure on the internet, radio, TV and social media. Following game day uploads stats and results into NJCAA-approved software.

5% Develop effective working relationships with local, regional, and national media covering Pellissippi State athletic events/competitions; and coordinate with the office of Marketing and Communications on announcements that deserve a press release and/or a strategic communications plan (examples include the addition of sports, the hiring of coaches, and any awards or honors the College's coaches or student-athletes receive).

50% Operates, cleans, maintains, fuels, and inspects a 27-passenger and a 15-passenger bus. Maintains accurate records of hours of service and miles driven. Performs simple repairs to keep the buses safe and operable. Overnight travel could be a possibility.

Key Result Areas: Measurable outcomes and results expected from this job include social media exposure and interaction, website views, coverage of teams on external media outlets, broadcast views for games/matches, and views of videos produced. Other results from this job are proper maintenance of records for teams and individuals, scorebook keeping, reporting statistics to conference officials, and nominating coaches and players for conference and national awards. The last measurable outcome will be safely delivering students and staff to their destinations.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or sport management. Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • 1 year in on-the-job experience or internships/assistantships in sports media field.

Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% of full-time experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years' experience driving with CDL Preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Communications, writing, organization, knowledge of sports/statistics, best social media practices, knowledge of live-streaming, graphic design.

  • General knowledge of bus operation, including engine, transmission, cooling systems, safety features, basic electrical and vehicle HVAC.

  • Able to engage in the College's mission and values.

Complexity & Creativity:

The Sports Information director will need to possess the ability to think critically, analytically, and creatively for this role.

Technical thinking will be required when evaluating the condition of the bus before operation.

Magnitude of Impact:

The severity of the issue will determine the departments involved. The majority of issues would be handled and reported to the athletics director. Financial issues may be resolved in conjunction with the business office; however, more complex issues may need to be resolved at the Vice-Presidential level through Administrative Affairs and Student Affairs. Violations of policy or regulations, or misconduct on the part of the Sports information director may require intervention from multiple levels of the college ranging from the Athletics Director, Dean of Students, Vice President of Student Affairs, and/or the college President.

Responsibility for Accuracy:

Typos in press releases or stat keeping. The errors would be caught by the NJCAA national stat keeping professionals. Quality of work is overseen by the Athletics Director. If these errors were not caught it could cause misreported statistical information. This information can be corrected. Accuracy and attention to detail will be important during pre-trip inspections. Attention to detail while operating vehicles will be critical to ensure safety.

Financial Impact:

The Sports information manager will handle cameras, laptops, and other electronics in conjunction with the streaming of games.

The driver position could directly incur costs due to operator error.

Budgetary:

Budgetary control will be authorized by Athletics Director.

Judgement & Decisions:

Creative decisions on what kind of content to produce on the website and on social media.

The driver position will involves making numerous judgement calls and decisions regarding traffic, routing, and logistics while operating the vehicle.

Nature of Contacts:

Typical contacts made in this position include contact with local media, conference and national leaders, coaches, and athletes.

Physical Demands:

The Sports Information Manager may work in various locations including gymnasium, weight room, and outdoors. The Sports Information Manager is required to perform work of an active nature, moving around locations requiring sufficient physical stamina to carry out duties. Requires ambulatory ability to lift medium-to-heavy weight materials, and balance. Requires auditory ability to project voice to a small group. Lift and move light to moderately heavy (less than 50 pounds) objects.

The Bus Driver functions require the following:

  • Ability to safely operate a large bus in various weather conditions.

  • Hours can vary depending on the scope and nature of an event

  • Working on weekends can occur based on event schedules.

  • Requires visual acuity to observe moving objects and recognize physical injuries.

  • Requires auditory ability to project voice to a small group.

  • Lift and move light to moderately heavy (less than 50 pounds) objects.

Hazards:

The sports information manager/bus driver is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions (cold, wet and humid) and/hot or humid gymnasium environment(s). Due to the nature of the position, bodily injury could occur, including damage from vehicular accidents or high sound volume exposure.
