Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Sports Field Maintenance Worker/Trades Technician II (00035) in Landscaping and Grounds. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing maintenance of sports facilities and equipment. This includes, but not limited to knowledge of natural grass and artificial turf, baseball and softball clay/infields, irrigation, field painting/lining, and equipment used in those areas. This position will be responsible for working athletic games on evenings and weekends. This position is considered to be emergency personnel, and must report to work or be called in due to inclement weather, in the case of emergency, staff shortage, etc.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform maintenance, proper horticultural practices, and repair of sports fields
Prepare fields and surrounding areas for sporting events
Work sporting events as needed
Safely operate and maintain rotary and reel mowers, tractors, field drags, blowers, weed eaters, paint machines, pressure washers, edgers, trimmers, aerators, paint machines, spreaders, and various hand tools
Perform other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
High school diploma or GED required
Valid driver's license
Must also be able to read, write, and follow directions in both written and verbal formats
Ability to safely lift 50-80 lbs. without assistance
Must be able to work in all types of weather, extreme heat, extreme cold, and/or wet weather
Knowledge of turf horticulture practices, NCAA competition field layouts, infield and clay maintenance, painting of fields, and irrigation, preferred
Provides high attention to detail in all duties
Demonstrated ability to properly use and service a variety of grounds/landscaping equipment, ex. rotary and reel mowers, tractors, field drags, blowers, weed eaters, paint machines, pressure washers, edger's, trimmers, aerators, paint machines, spreaders, and various hand tools
Available to respond to emergency calls 24/7, if needed
Must be able to work a flexible schedule, to include evenings and weekends
Must be able to meet the University criteria regarding the use and operation of state vehicles
Registered Technician's License to apply pesticides or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
State Fertilizer Applicator Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment
Experience maintaining athletic fields at NCAA standards
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, classified, non-exempt position in a pay band 2. A successful criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply
