The Department of Athletics is seeking a Sport Psychologist. This is a full-time (1.0FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

Under the direction of the Associate Athletic Director, Sport Psychology Services, the Sport Psychologist provides a broad range of psychological services to Oregon State University student-athletes and teams. These services are designed to promote student-athlete mental health, holistic wellness, academic achievement, and athletic excellence. The Sport Psychologist collaborates with and provides consultation to departmental units and campus partners. Demonstrable commitments to professional ethics/boundaries and multicultural competency/cultural humility are essential for this role. Other important qualities include self-motivation, robust work ethic, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, commitment to interdisciplinary care, and flexibility to adapt to change in a dynamic collegiate athletic environment. Additionally, nuanced understanding of athletic identity and culture is critical to success in this position.

Key Responsibilities

50% Direct Service

  • Individual Counseling: Provide evidence-based individual psychotherapy and mental skills training to a diverse student-athlete population presenting with a wide range of clinical issues in accordance with licensure, scope of practice, ethical considerations, and best practices.

  • Group Counseling: Provide group counseling to student-athletes focused on mental health, identity development, athletic performance, and other relevant topics.

  • Crisis Intervention: Provide responsive crisis intervention services to student-athletes, including consultation with departmental staff and campus partners to ensure follow-up care as warranted.

10% Outreach/Consultation

  • Provide workshops and programming to student-athletes, teams, and support staff centered on mental performance, team dynamics, mental health promotion, and holistic wellness.

  • Consult with key stakeholders, as permissible and warranted, to develop and implement individualized and targeted psychological services for each student-athlete/team.

  • Serve as a consultation resource to OSU Sports Medicine team and other medical and mental health professionals.

  • Engage in case coordination and referral management.

  • Assist with return to play processes following student-athlete injuries.

  • Foster strong professional relationships with departmental staff and campus partners who focus on serving student-athletes.

  • Create and expand opportunities to encourage student dialogue, engage historically marginalized and underserved populations, promote cultural competence across all constituencies, and affirm and celebrate the University's commitment to inclusive excellence.

10% Training & Supervision

  • Provide training and clinical supervision to postdoctoral fellows, doctoral interns, and practicum therapists.

  • Plan, assign and review the work of trainees as appropriate and needed.

20% Clinical Documentation, Recordkeeping and Communication

  • Maintains appropriate clinical documentation and recordkeeping processes commensurate with current standards of the profession.

  • Management of email and telephone correspondence.

  • Maintain and promote the highest ethical and professional standards commensurate with training and licensure.

  • Support the implementation of psychological services policies and procedures.

10% Continuing Education & Professional Development

  • Pursue professional development in service of the responsibilities of the position and the profession.

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and case conferences; serve on departmental and campus committees.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Will Need

  • Doctoral degree in clinical/counseling psychology from an APA-accredited program.

  • Eligible for licensure in the State of Oregon within one year of employment.

  • Demonstrable commitment to professional ethics and boundaries.

  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

  • Demonstrable commitment to multicultural competency, cultural humility, and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with sports medicine professionals, staff, and campus partners.

  • Advanced knowledge and skills in evidenced-based counseling theory and practice.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Flexibility to adapt to change and multitask in a dynamic collegiate athletic environment.

  • Understanding of the collegiate student-athlete experience, athletic identity, and the cultural nuances of NCAA Division I athletics.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Currently licensed in the State of Oregon.

  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) as administered by the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

  • Two years of post-graduate professional counseling experience.

  • Experience in treating disordered eating/body image concerns.

  • Experience working with collegiate student-athletes.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with and/or clinical experience in addressing issues specific to the female student-athlete experience.

  • Completion of academic coursework in the specialty area of sport psychology.

  • Experience in the development and provision of mental health and sport psychology programming.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and engage audiences in public speaking settings.

  • Broad understanding of the physiological, nutritional, motor movement, and training principles that influence athletic performance.

  • Experience in the provision of clinical supervision.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Work hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Occasional after-hours meetings and/or weekend work may be required. A flexible work schedule may be requested for this position.
