Speech Pathologist & Assistant Director of STEP

Eastern Illinois University is seeking candidates for a Speech Pathologist & Assistant Director of STEP, EIU's transitional education program for college students with autism.

STEP provides programming to foster university students' social communication, strategic and self-directed use of executive functions, and academic problem-solving abilities for university students with autism spectrum disorder. The position requires professional knowledge on the nature and treatment of executive functions and social communication difficulties with adolescents and adults. It requires the ability to ascertain and deliver therapeutic techniques appropriate to students' social, communicative, cognitive, and executive function needs as they relate to academic and self-regulation needs for independent daily living within the university environment.

This position requires the ability to: establish clinical and programmatic priorities; use critical thinking, clinical evidence, and flexible problem solving to support students' needs; organize, prepare, and maintain case files, reports records, and correspondence; establish and maintain cooperative communication and effective working relationships with program participants, parents, staff, university colleagues, and outside groups and potential students; conduct analysis and review of programmatic services and outcomes to support admission and retention of students; develop materials and professional outreach interactions to support awareness and understanding of the program mission.

Required Qualifications

  • Current License as a Speech Pathologist by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation (IDFPR) OR National ASHA Certification as a Speech Pathologist, licensure in another state and eligibility for Illinois license.

  • Two (2) years (24 months) of experience as a licensed Speech Pathologist.

Under administrative supervision from the Director of STEP and the Chair of Communication Disorders & Sciences, the Speech Pathologist/Assistant Director of STEP will:

  • Evaluate and enhance the services provided to students in the STEP Program.

  • Assign, coordinate, and review the work of subordinate staff within STEP.

  • Conduct and review instructional, training, research, recruitment, and admission activities of STEP.

  • Assists with budget requests for the unit and recommend the purchase of equipment & materials.

  • Complete reports required by management concerning unit activities, TAP grant reporting, accomplishments, and goals.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

This is a full-time 10-month position during the academic year, with flexibility over scheduled University holidays.
