Graduate of an accredited Master's, or Doctorate level program. More than one year of clinical experience preferred; strong entry level candidates will be considered. Environmental / Working Conditions:

Works inside under normal temperature conditions with adequate light, in a well ventilated, clean area. Some areas are limited in space, and some patient rooms/specific units such as the Burn Unit may be warm. Usually works around others, may expect some moderate noise.

Frequently works with biologic or infectious agents and may be exposed to communicable diseases. May come in contact with irritating chemicals or sprays. May be exposed to muscular strain in supporting, lifting and assisting patients.

Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships: Displays a professional attitude at all times, be thoughtful of others, and be neat and well groomed. The therapist will need to carry out close working relationships with many people including but not limited to: the Director and IP/OP Managers, SLP Supervisor, other SLPs, PTs, PTAs, support personnel, OTs, Physicians, Nursing Staff, Social Services, RTs, Radiology, Food and Nutrition, and most importantly patients and their family members or caregivers.

Should have the flexibility to schedule around the previously mentioned services, if needed, and have the ability to organize time in order to treat the maximum number of patients in the allotted working day. Should also offer help to co-workers in the event of conflicts/cancellations in their patient load. Job Description:

Responsibility to evaluate, establish a plan of care, treat, and assist with discharge planning for all patients referred to PM&R for SLP services. Expected to maintain the highest level of quality patient care at all times. The SLP will assist in the orientation, supervision, and training of support personnel, as well as students and volunteers.

Expected to be involved in clinical education of graduate level SLP externs. Expected to complete daily documentation and charges, and schedule patients daily. May be assigned to other specialty areas, and it will be expected to be competent in all areas provided by this Department.

Adheres to policies, procedures, and standards of practice as defined by and/or stated by the 1) American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2) Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 3) DNV, 4) UMC Standard Policy and Procedure Manual, 5) PM&R Policy and Procedure Manual. Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations: Must hold current Texas State Licensure or Intern License if completing Clinical Fellowship.

Must hold Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association or qualify for certification after completion of Clinical Fellowship year. Physical Capabilities: Good physical stamina, be able to be on feet most of the day and be fairly strong and energetic.

Work frequently requires much walking, standing, carrying, talking, and hearing, and listening. Lifting more than 50 pounds is occasionally required to reposition patients. Hours may be long and irregular and may include weekends and holidays.

Skills and Abilities: Must adhere to the bylaws established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Should speak intelligently and in a professional manner before others, demonstrate good public relations, demonstrate assertiveness, flexibility, and tact.

Perform technical procedures: Have ability and competency to operate necessary equipment. Must be able to instill confidence in patients, physicians, and personnel.

Determine proper procedures and methods of treatment and evaluate results. Make decisions independently. Adapt to emergency situations.

Be alert to changes in the patient's condition. Demonstrate economic use of time. Know techniques of assisting and handling patients.

Must possess a high degree of accuracy in carrying out prescriptions, receiving and translating information, charting, and reporting. Demonstrate supervisory and management skills and have ability to delegate tasks as needed. Understand Department/Facility policies/procedures and regulations.
