The staff Speech Therapist functions as an integral part of the rehabilitation team and has a responsibility for evaluating and treating patients requiring services associated with speech therapy. The Speech Therapist is expected to communicate with the physicians regarding the patient's treatment plan and progress and deliver services consistent with policies and procedures governing the delivery of patient care by the Rehabilitation Department, State Licensure and Code of Ethics standards.

Position primarily focuses on Pediatrics and Outpatient Speech patient population. Works closely with interdisciplinary team (OT/PT/Providers) to coordinate care plans for best patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Performs examination and evaluation to determine diagnosis and prognosis of patient/client and determine appropriate intervention to gain expected outcomes based on patient/client goals including a collaborative approach with patient/family and health care team.

  • Utilizes of appropriate Speech Therapy interventions to produce desired outcomes.

  • Utilizes of appropriate documentation and billing to communicate progress and status to physicians, other healthcare professionals and third party reimbursement.

  • Utilizes critical thinking in making independent judgements and maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.

  • Able to demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies of a speech therapist.

  • Keeps work area and equipment clean and orderly by maintaining and practicing hospital and departmental policies and procedures regarding safety and infection control.

Development & Patient Education

  • Performs as a member of the Rehabilitation Department through joint interventions, communication and quality assurance programs and meetings.

  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance therapy practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.

  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient/family needs including age, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.

  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential and actual concerns immediately.

Basic UPH Performance Criteria

  • Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.

  • Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.

  • Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.

  • Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.

  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.

  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Education:

Master's degree from accredited curriculum in Speech Therapy

Experience:

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current licensure in good standing to practice in the state of Iowa

Must possess and maintain current BLS certification or obtain certification within three months from date of hire. Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually

Membership in Professional Association is desirable

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Customer/patient focused.
