Who We Are:

Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 15,500 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. Our District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9 - 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Speech/Language Pathologist will be directly responsible to the Coordinator of Speech/Language. The function of the Speech/Language Pathologist involves many aspects.

The first of these is to identify those children who exhibit a communication disorder. This disorder interferes with their being understood when talking to others. The SLP then works with these children in not only helping them to express their unique needs, but to also understand what others are saying to them. Another function includes giving some basic ideas to parents and teachers, which may influence their work with children's speech and language skills.

Responsibilities: Supportive services that shall be provided by the school district, are: Speech and Language Service for all students with speech and/or language impairments that interfere with their educational or social development.

  • Speech and Language services may be made available as: A supportive service to the standard program; A related service to a special program; A special program;

  • Speech and Language services shall include, but not be limited to: Screening and diagnosis of children with speech and/or language impairment; Planning and developing the Therapeutic Intervention program; Providing therapy for children with impairments of oral language comprehension, production or usage, including disorders of fluency, phonation, resonance, articulation, and oral language formation; Parent counseling; Referrals and follow-up; Consultative and resource services to other professional personnel;

  • The number of children seen by a Speech/Language Pathologist shall be based on the severity of the speech and language needs of the individual child; Caseload shall be determined by service units based on severity of students need; A full-time caseload will equal 100-125 service units weekly based on the building and population served; A part-time caseload will equal 25-30 service units daily based on the building and population served; Students are to be seen in small group sessions; When a student presents with exceptional characteristics which would preclude a group setting as an effective therapeutic intervention, then that student may be seen on an individual basis;

  • On Wednesdays, no children receive direct therapeutic intervention; The SLP is to utilize Wednesdays for testing, screening, developing lesson plans, completing paperwork, attending meetings, and/or other duties which may be assigned.

Qualifications: Must have a valid Illinois Professional Educators License (PEL).
