We are looking for a Per Diem Speech-Language Pathologist with NICU experience to join our Feeding/Swallowing team in Boston!

The Brigham and Women's Level 3 NICU is the largest in Massachusetts, provides care for newborns of all gestational ages, and is specially equipped to care for infants as young as 23 weeks gestational age.

The Per Diem Speech-Language Pathologist position requires is an individual with an unrestricted license to practice speech language pathology in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, with at least three (3) years of neonatal/acute pediatric hospital experience. Their primary responsibility is to provide patient care to neonates and newborns in the NICU, newborn nursery, and/or infants and children in the ambulatory developmental clinic up to three years of age, in accordance to State licensing regulations, departmental standards and policies, and accepted professional standards of care.

Specifically:

  • Examines and evaluates patient's communication and swallowing function. Identifies speech, language and/or swallowing disorders and associated dysfunction(s). In collaboration with the patient and/or caregiver, develops a treatment plan with treatment goals directed towards maximizing function.

  • Demonstrates competency in all clinical knowledge and skills specific to the patient case type(s) in assigned area of care.

  • Consults with other members of the health care team to insure coordination and effectiveness of therapies provided.

  • Assists in implementation of triaging, prioritizing, monitoring admissions, referrals, and discharges to and from the service as assigned.

  • Manages patient caseload assigned.

  • Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills. Maintains documentation according to departmental policy and format that is accurate, complete and timely.

  • Participates in activities directed towards increasing knowledge and skill and professional development.

  • Participates in departmental meetings, which help to formulate policies, procedures and program development.

  • Supervises graduate student interns and support personnel as appropriate. Peer-mentors new employees.

  • Trains radiology residents in technique and procedures for video swallow studies.

  • Performs administrative duties which may include responsibility for equipment and supply maintenance, quality assurance, documentation propriety, continuing education, space management, reimbursement tracking, productivity tracking, caseload triage, student program, competency assurance, accreditation.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by the Speech and Swallow Service.

Qualifications:
1.Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited university program.
2.Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association.
3.Possess or be eligible for licensure in Speech-Language Pathology from the state of Massachusetts
4.Demonstrate expertise in the diagnosis and remediation of oropharyngeal dysphagia and neurogenic communication disorders preferred.
5.Experience with videofluoroscopic oropharyngeal swallowing and FEES evaluations preferred
6.Work requires up to three months orientation to acquire necessary familiarity with department and hospital policies and procedures, and the specific quality standards of care and procedures unique to the assigned patient area.
7.Must have at least three years experience.

Skills:
1.Possess interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with a variety of individuals.
2.Must possess effective communication skills (written and verbal) to interact with patients, colleagues and other health care personnel.
3.Competent/able to achieve competency in Video Swallow Studies and FEES.
4.Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands.
5.Must possess the physical abilities needed to assist with moving patients (pulling, pushing and lifting) from stretcher to stretcher/chair for swallow studies and to push stretchers from the radiology suite to inpatient reception (100 feet). Also must have the physical abilities needed to assist patients with stand pivot transfers. Must be able to push portable work stations for video swallow and FEES evaluations.
6.Must possess the stamina to do standing work over 75% of the day and the fine motor skills necessary to work a keyboard.
7.Must demonstrate skills and knowledge that consistently exceed those expected of a staff level clinician. Strong clinical knowledge and competencies will be evident in either dysphagia evaluation and management or language and cognitive deficits, and/or as a clinician with strong generalists' skills.
8.Must demonstrate ongoing professional growth and development as evident by such activities as participation in continuing education, and/or other pertinent professional endeavors and provide peers with education/training through the department's CEU or other programs
9.Must demonstrate the ability to perform well with a minimum amount of supervision, independently take on additional tasks and responsibilities, and complete those activities assumed with a minimum amount of supervisory intervention.
10. Is highly regarded for their demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative and constructive manner to accomplish the goals and mission of the hospital and the department
11. Must demonstrate the ability to perform an amount of work in either clinical or administrative areas beyond staff expectations, without compromising the quality of work in any area. In addition, the clinician will have a record of skillful time management and flexibility in handling transitions.

Working conditions:

Frequently (over 75% of the time) works on patient floors where there is the potential for exposure to infectious/contagious agents and blood borne pathogens. Also often (25-50% of the time) works in radiology with exposure to radiation, cleaning agents/chemicals, and noisy equipment. Work requires physical effort for positioning of patients and/or equipment, which could result in musculoskeletal strain or injury to staff when done with improper body mechanics. Inattention to proper safety procedures during patient transfers could result in injury to the patient. Involves working with critically ill patients, which may produce a high level of stress and mental fatigue.

In addition to providing evaluations and interventions that are consistent with accepted Standards of Practice of the profession to appropriately referred patients, a Senior Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for providing administrative, supervisory, and education/marketing duties as delegated by the Coordinator and acts as Coordinator in that person's absence. Practice Locations: BWH, DFCI Head and Neck Oncology Clinic, Dana Farber Inpatient Hospital within BWH Hospital. Provides skilled speech-language and swallowing services as assigned to patients at Brigham and Women's Hospital and at Dana Farber Cancer Institute in accordance with State Licensure Statute and Regulations, Professional Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, applicable federal, state and regulatory agencies' standards and regulations, hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
