SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Speech Instructor's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing instruction for students enrolled in Speech or Communications courses (along with other related courses and topics) in the General Education and Developmental Studies Department, including dual credit high school students. This individual is also responsible for advising students, maintaining office hours, teaching extended day classes, hybrid/online courses, as required, both on campus and at alternate locations. This individual attends workshops, seminars, and conferences to enhance teaching skills, in addition to assisting in the development of curriculum. All LIT faculty are responsible for recruitment and retention as a part of achieving the Institute's Shared Vision of Growth and Excellence.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively engage students in the learning process

  • Teach classes during the fall and spring semesters as required by the department (might include day, evening, weekend, and Early College High School/dual credit); including online courses

  • Partner with the dual credit department to ensure dual credit student retention and success

  • Participate in college service, which includes but is not limited to, committee work, advising and/or tutoring students, and recruiting

  • Utilize a variety of technological tools and platforms, such as educational software and online learning management systems, to create engaging and effective learning experiences for students.

  • Maintain ethical and professional behavior

  • Maintain knowledge of and adherence to the policies and procedures contained in the TSUS and LIT Policies and Procedures Manual

  • Provide mentorship to dual credit partners/mentees

  • Attend Teaching and Learning Center sessions to enhance teaching skills

  • Stay abreast of national matters and trends in education

  • Participate in assessment activities for the LIT Core Curriculum

  • Assist in the development of curriculum as needed

  • Perform other related duties, as required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the ability to: remain in a stationary position for most of the time; occasionally move about inside an office to access documents, office equipment, etc.; constantly operate a computer or other office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Master's degree in Speech or Communications or Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in Speech/Communications

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

  • Two years (or more) of related experience in communication or a related field

  • Knowledge of teaching methodologies/pedagogical strategies

  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work well in a team environment

  • Possess good time management skills

Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching in higher education

  • Doctorate degree in subject area

  • Related field and/or industry certifications
