The Specimen Processing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing phlebotomists and laboratory assistants on processing and collection of specimens from patients. This person will report to the Lab Manager Implements good public relations by representing the laboratory directly to patients, physicians and hospital staff at all times. Assures quality of work, workflow, turn-around-time; assures accurate testing to support quality patient care; accepts suggestions and corrections and adjusts to changing situations. This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that this individual will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values and shall support the Hospital's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.


  • Under the general supervision of Laboratory Manager, responsible for the operation of the Specimen processing and collection department.

  • Works closely with the Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Director to meet the administrative and financial goals of the department

  • Responsible for meeting the service and quality goals of the department. Assumes responsibility for daily operations and meets CLIA requirements for Clinical Laboratory

  • Provides training for phlebotomists and laboratory assistants

  • Proactively identifies and implements improvements and lean initiatives

  • Responsible for making clinical/technical decisions in the resolution of testing/reporting issues, maintenance of the quality and security of department work flow documentation and meeting hospital goals to ensure accurate and timely patient care.

  • Schedule of Full time and per diem staff according to policy with management approval.

  • Work collaboratively with other department leaders to have a more efficient workflow for the Clinical laboratory.

  • Responsible for ensuring staff compliance with hospital policies and meeting regulatory requirements within their assigned areas (e.g. coordinate meal breaks, corrected reports, attendance, overtime and punctuality)

  • Assists in monitoring quality assurance for laboratory information systems

  • Researches/resolves department problems/issues

  • Setting an example- must always be conscious of how his / her words and actions will be perceived.

  • Attend minimum of three (3) leadership seminar/workshop annually

  • Other duties as assigned


A. Education

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

B. Qualifications/Experience

  • 1 year experience required in blood specimen collections; 3 years preferred
  • 1 year leadership experience in an acute care setting required

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Proficient with LIS and computer applications

  • Current CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician License

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Strong organizational skills; ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Strong technical skills (MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Project, Visio etc.)

The technician will perform a variety of tasks depending on the specific Specimen Management Center Assistant level held and supports the various teams of the Specimen Management. The technician is a liaison between Specimen Management and the other laboratory. Job Duties & Responsibilities: * Ensure that specimens are picked up from the appropriate department, sorted, pre-scanned and registered into the appropriate temperature bins in a timely fashion. * Identification of problem samples and corrects routing of these specimens. * Close and prepare SDS shipments. * Accountable for accurately identifying specimens that need to be discarded and completing the discard process. * Creation of new storage drawers for use in the registration process and the ability to complete location moves in the SMART database. * Consolidate and move drawers as specified to effectively utilize freezer space. * Perform basic freezer maintenance including but not limited to: * Acts as a backup to the freezer coordinator. * Monitor, respond to and resolve issues with alarming Specimen Management units, and/or appreciate department, to ensure regulatory compliance and monitor follow-up for corrective actions. * Accountable for initialing appropriate freezer documentation * Understand the pull list and pull the specimens from the freezers. * Understand and apply the shipping instructions and pack the specimens as per requirements. * Generation and application of specialized labels, to include mini labels and/or computer generated bar codes. * Perform any QC needed during the process of pulling and packaging. * Must be able to QC shipments shipped thru SMART. * QC packages and shipping documents. * Stock supplies from warehouse. * Ship packages thru SMART. * Ship pass-through and Transfer Test packages to other locations. * Generate and download EPLs from SMART. * Generate emails and insert EPLs. * Be able to accurately and efficiently Prescan, Register, Process, Pull, and Pack specimens using SMART. * Completion of beginning and end of day duties, as assigned. * Adhere to all company policies and procedures and perform all departmental and interdepartmental SOP's as written. * Generate an appropriate audit trail of all activities and maintains own training file and required documentation. Job Qualifications * High School diploma required. Associate's degree (AS) in a Scientific discipline preferred. * Minimum 1 year applicable work experience * Able to work in a team as well as independently * Dynamic attitude and ability to work under pressure * Ability to take up challenges * Strong detail orientation * Strong communication and organizational skills * Ability to use several software packages i.e. Word, Excel, Access Kelly complies with the requirements of the Fair Chance Initiative.
