The Specimen Processing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing phlebotomists and laboratory assistants on processing and collection of specimens from patients. This person will report to the Lab Manager Implements good public relations by representing the laboratory directly to patients, physicians and hospital staff at all times. Assures quality of work, workflow, turn-around-time; assures accurate testing to support quality patient care; accepts suggestions and corrections and adjusts to changing situations. This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that this individual will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values and shall support the Hospital's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general supervision of Laboratory Manager, responsible for the operation of the Specimen processing and collection department.
Works closely with the Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Director to meet the administrative and financial goals of the department
Responsible for meeting the service and quality goals of the department. Assumes responsibility for daily operations and meets CLIA requirements for Clinical Laboratory
Provides training for phlebotomists and laboratory assistants
Proactively identifies and implements improvements and lean initiatives
Responsible for making clinical/technical decisions in the resolution of testing/reporting issues, maintenance of the quality and security of department work flow documentation and meeting hospital goals to ensure accurate and timely patient care.
Schedule of Full time and per diem staff according to policy with management approval.
Work collaboratively with other department leaders to have a more efficient workflow for the Clinical laboratory.
Responsible for ensuring staff compliance with hospital policies and meeting regulatory requirements within their assigned areas (e.g. coordinate meal breaks, corrected reports, attendance, overtime and punctuality)
Assists in monitoring quality assurance for laboratory information systems
Researches/resolves department problems/issues
Setting an example- must always be conscious of how his / her words and actions will be perceived.
Attend minimum of three (3) leadership seminar/workshop annually
Other duties as assigned
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
Proficient with LIS and computer applications
Current CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician License
Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
Strong organizational skills; ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously
Strong technical skills (MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Project, Visio etc.)
