The Specialty Class Instructor is responsible for leading classes in a specialized program area, such as dance, yoga, any of the martial arts, arts and humanities, etc. The incumbent will instruct quality classes and provide excellent customer service to members and program participants in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Plan and instruct progressive classes in a specialty area.

  • Observe and discuss individual progress with participants.

  • Motivate and guide class and program participation.

  • Set up and take down class equipment and report equipment problems.

  • Ensure safe and effective classes; responding to and reporting any accidents or incidents.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Required
  • Formal training in the specialty class being taught

  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR, First Aid, and AED

  • Demonstrated customer service and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to individually lead a class and motivate participants

  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations

  • Ability to set up, move and store class equipment

Qualifications

  • Preferred
  • 1 year experience in specialty format being taught

Physical Demands

  • Ability to instruct assigned classes and perform associated physical activities.

Essential Functions * Lead quality group fitness classes, as directed by the Program Manager, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals. * Conduct energizing, fun, safe, and educational classes . * Maintain working knowledge of fitness industry and YMCA trends to provide effective information and training to members. * Keep accurate class attendance records. * Be able to respond and follow YMCA policies and procedures in emergency situations. Competencies * Values * Inclusion * Relationships * Quality Results * Communication * Functional Requirements Qualifications - Required * Required Certifications: CPR, AED, National Certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise Certification * Certification in areas of expertise; i.e. Les Mills (Cardio, Strength, Yoga, Cycle, Mat Pilates, Dance, Active Older Adults, Silver Sneakers, etc.) * Attend and successfully complete within 90 days of hire: YMCA Healthy Lifestyles * Demonstrated customer service and communication skills Qualifications - Preferred * 1 year of experience teaching group fitness classes Work Conditions * Ability to conduct classes and activities relating to fitness.
