THIS IS A NON-CIVIL SERVICE POSITION

(Part Time approximately 5-10 hrs /weekly)

Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, Bureau of Parks is seeking dependable and qualified individuals to fill part-time non-civil service STEM/STEAM Program Designer positions.

NOTICE:This is a position of trust. Individuals selected for this position will be required to pass a drug & alcohol screening, a criminal background check, and receive clearance from Child Protective Services prior to being appointed.

Position Description

Baltimore City Recreation and Parks (BCRP) offers out-of-school time STEM/STEAM opportunities at Rec2Tech focused recreation centers across Baltimore City. BCRP's Rec2Tech initiative aims to provide students with opportunities to engage with STEM/STEAM content through hands-on experiences while exploring careers in the STEM/STEAM fields.

Specialized Instructors (STEM and Maker Ed) will develop specialized STEM/STEAM/MakerEd courses for young people and will lead a minimum of one 10-20 hour course per program session (fall, winter, spring, summer). Courses will be offered at one of five BCRP Rec2Tech locations during evening hours (M-F 5pm-8pm), on Saturdays, and/or seasonally (ie: summer). Specialized Instructors will work with BCRP's STEM Coordinator to identify new content focused on one of the Rec2Tech key pathways of robotics, computer science, engineering, electronics, and/or digital fabrication/maker education. Existing supplies, materials, and equipment will be provided to support course delivery. On occasion, new supplies, materials, and equipment will be purchased to support new courses. Specialized Instructors will write a course syllabus, develop course curriculum, write lesson plans, and provide training for peers on all newly developed courses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Content Development

  • Identify new content aligned to Rec2Tech pathways and student interest.

  • Design specialized courses related to new content identified.

  • Develop syllabus, curriculum, and lesson plans for specialized courses.

  • Share developed content by providing training for staff.

Program Delivery and Instruction

  • Teach a minimum of one 10-20-hour course, per program session (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer).

  • Prepare for daily lessons by reviewing and practicing activities prior to program delivery.

  • Adapt teaching strategies to accommodate a variety of learning styles and capabilities.

  • Guide, encourage, support, and supervise a group of 10-15 students during class time.

  • Implement and maintain appropriate behavioral management for program participants.

  • Ensure safety and productivity of participants.

Administrative Support

  • Submit completed syllabus, curriculum, and lessons to share drive for BCRP agency access.

  • Complete and submit daily attendance tracking during course offering.

  • Administer and collect end of session and student interest surveys.

  • Assist with recruiting and identifying students for specialized courses.

  • Support additional STEM program activities as schedule allows.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong teaching and group facilitation skills.

  • Understanding of instructional practices and youth development.

  • Direct experience with STEM/STEAM content and/or maker education.

  • Ability to work independently developing curriculum and lessons for specialized content courses.

  • Ability to prepare and lead professional development for peers.

  • Ability to accommodate a multitude of learning styles and differentiate instruction as needed.

  • Strong organizational skills and a flexible attitude.

  • Strong communication (written and oral), organizational, customer service, and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms).

Minimum Education

Education/Work Experience:

A Bachelor's Degree (or actively pursuing) in Education or in a STEM/STEAM content area.

Education Work Equivalency:Three years of related work experience in a STEM/STEAM profession such as an artist, designer, maker, or in a related industry or trade position will satisfy the degree requirement for this position.

Experience:

One or more of the following experiences required:

  • Experience teaching or leading programs for K-12 students.

  • Experience teaching or leading programs for adults.

  • Experience in developing curriculum.

  • Experience with a specialized trade.

Experience developing programs, activities, and/or lessons specifically for STEM/STEAM content not required, but a plus.

Compensation

The salary is $22.00 per hour.

Funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant and sponsored by Digital Harbor Foundation (DHF) and UMBC, the</p><p>Maker Foundations Instructorswill serve as the key mentors and coaches for youth interested in maker-based (makerspace) technology and computer science programs. Individuals will support youth (ages 10-16) in discovering and developing their potential through technology and maker activities at two recreation centers in Baltimore City.</p><p>Maker Foundations Instructorswill develop and deliver a Maker Foundations course focused on the following learning modules: Intro to Making, Game Design, Graphic Design, Electronics, 3D Printing, and Web Design/EPortfolio. While technical training and support will be provided, instructors will be responsible for content development, lesson planning, and instruction.</p><p>Maker Foundations Instructorswill focus on three key areas:</p><ul><li>Teach</li></ul><ul><li>Prepare content and serve as a lead instructor for a Maker Foundations course while supporting students as makers, leaders, and
